Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I went over discrete questions on physics (kinematics, Newton's forces) and passages on biology (cell division, cell structure and embryology). I mentioned to her that she would need to know the kinematic equations well for the test beforehand. She did better with Newton's forces once I gave her some initial hints in solving the questions. In terms of biology, she was relatively strong in embryology theory."
"Tonight, we did a review of optics, briefly address magnetism/RHRs, and addressed oxidation/ reduction as it relates to organic chemistry. Next session, we will plan to do more with magnetism, as well as a lecture about basic immunology."
"We worked through mostly physics, especially optics. We covered an optics section test, then several passages from a section test focusing on chemistry, along with briefly reviewing other topics."
"As this was our first session, we spent the first 45 minutes or so discussing what science classes the student has taken to date, how she has already prepared for the test. Additionally, I explained how we need to be on a timeline and how the next month or so will revolve around me giving her chapters to review, with a focus on Physics and Biology, and us going over material/questions during our sessions. We will weave Verbal throughout that month, and do a few full-length practice tests as checkpoints and so she can see how knowing the information differs from actually applying it. The 3-4 weeks leading up to her test will consist mainly of full-length practice tests, and we will focus on timing and test-taking strategies. After having discussed these things, we spent the last hour or so of the session going over Kinematics. The equations came back quickly, and we did a few practice questions together. She utilized the equations well, and I had her read questions fully."
"The student and I met for his last session before his exam day. He had good news on two fronts; He was able to score a 9 in 71 minutes over the weekend! He also learned he was admitted to his first choice program for next year. He seemed in a good mood based on these two achievements. I certainly hope this positive momentum will help him achieve his goal on Thursday. We discussed how he was able to get his time down, and what strategies he should use during the exam. I told him to really hold himself to 8 minutes per passage on his next practice exam, and to report back to me whether he was able to do so. This way we could re-assess his strategy if we needed to. He wrote to me in an e-mail that he was able to complete an exam in 60 minutes, and scored a 9! I think he is as ready as he will ever be."
"Today we covered a lot in session. We first talked about the student's progress. He took a practice test recently, and scored a 30. We both still believe that he can get a higher score with more practice. He got a 12 on Physical Sciences, and I believe he can get his Biology and Reading at least up to a 10, if not higher. We then went over the actual practice test he took and noticed mistakes that could have been avoided. I showed him how he should pause between each paragraph of a passage and also really utilize any charts/graphs given to him. He should understand them before moving on to answering the questions. This helped him to answer a few of the questions he originally missed. Next, we went over glycolysis, Krebs cycle and the electron transport chain. We concluded the session with answering a few questions the student had on some Physics passages he did for practice."
"This was a question and answer session. We also worked on some challenging passages. Furthermore, I gave her some free standing questions to complete."
"Good session. Focused entirely on verbal. I did a couple example passages myself to illustrate my thought process, and then had the student do one himself."
"MCAT biology review Topics included biochemistry/metabolism, oxidative respiration, carbohydrates/lipids/proteins/nucleic acid DNA synthesis, transcription/translation, protein folding DNA damage and repair"
"The student and I reviewed electricity and magnetism during this last session. We will continue with these topics next time as well as begin to take full length physical science practice tests."
"Reviewed general test-taking and anxiety-reducing strategies, and reviewed incorrect answers to physical science and biology from practice test."
"Discussed the student's experience with his review course, identified areas that the student had questions on, formulated a weekly plan for taking practice examinations, and reviewed several topics in the assessment physics (kinematics, mechanics, and basic trigonometry)."
