Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We started working through his test reviews as material to identify what he doesn't understand as well and solidify his knowledge. We worked mostly on Radiation/emission type problems as well as calorimetry problems. We focused on using units to help get correct answers and solve problems."
"We both started studying for his social studies test on Wednesday by studying the meaning of community, different areas of a community, and how to get to those different places. We also went the quiz website and studied more with social studies. Student just took a math test on Friday so I went ahead and started him on multiplication. He did his times table all the way to 12. Also we discussed grades and what he has to do in the next couple of weeks. Student also read his book for 30 minutes today. Student did an awesome job."
"We started the session working on Othello Act 5 scene 2. I asked questions about the scene to determine the student's understanding of it. We finished the session going over topics that could be on the essay test he will have this week. "
"Today we did a lot of conversation and talked about useful vocabulary and phrases. The students read their one-page responses about their weekend, and from there we just kept talking and covering grammar and other interesting points as they came up."
"In this session, the student and I worked on acid/base problems. We talked about which acids and bases were strong. We worked through problems to find equilibrium concentrations, starting concentrations, and pH. Lastly, we discussed how to convert between hydrogen ion concentration and pH."
"We looked at multiplying decimals, which was a first for the student. She caught on very quickly and liked the "shortcuts" we learned. We then looked at rules for semicolons and colons, and practiced identifying which situations call for each type of punctuation."
"Today was our final review before the student takes the ACT. The student has shown considerable skill on the content in general, and definite growth and improvement in the reading and science sections in particular. We worked through another sample science section together, which the student completed with 95% accuracy. Moving to the reading section, we worked on one passage together, and then the student worked on one with only minimal prompting. Results were again in the high 90s. As a refresher, we also examined two passages from the English section, and the student's performance here was flawless. The session concluded with a brief review of some dos and don'ts for the essay, and a discussion on how to minimize test anxiety. His content knowledge and critical thinking skills are top-notch; addressing the test seriously and patiently should yield a very high composite score."
"Worked on Geometry homework. Had a pretty good session, was really focused for most of it. Still struggling with understanding the reasoning in proofs, keeps wanting to use what you are proving as a justification for earlier steps. Also still having difficulty keeping work organized and legible."
"The student and I worked a little bit on her World Religions quiz. We then worked on her History of Photography class. She has a discussion on Modern and Post-modern photography, we ran out of time to deal with it but, I have been 'texting' suggestions to her."
"Today we reviewed the more specific sections of the math exam. We spent time reviewing the composition of the exam and then spent time reviewing topics that challenged the student when she took the practice exam. Most of the session was spent reviewing Geometry topics."
"Continued to work on blends and digraphs. The student is doing a great job being able to sound out the blends and identify the letters that are associated with the sounds. We also reviewed addition of 2 digit numbers."
"We went over the student's recent Geometry work involving circles and tangent lines. We reviewed the assigned homework problems and reviewed some of the earlier theorems. Overall, the student seemed to understand the material very well."
