Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked through several math and reading sections in the guidebook. We discussed her strategy for Saturday's exam in depth, and I sent her the common vocabulary words and word roots lists. She has a good grasp of Latin, so using word roots will likely prove useful to her in discerning the meaning of unfamiliar words."
"We went over every Algebra problem in one of the Math sections of a practice test from the study guide, not only going over detailed solutions to each such problem, but also having the student then do similar problems with different quantities that I created to further cement the methods and content knowledge in."
"The student is taking the PSAT tomorrow and it's been a while since we last met so we spent the session reviewing her strategies, the outline of the PSAT, and working math, reading, and writing sections. She did well on the sections she completed today; I hope that today's session was a good refresher for her and wish her luck on the test tomorrow."
"Another great session with the student. We worked on sentence corrections and reading passages mostly today. She did great on sentence correction, and I challenged her with some really tough reading passages. We finished with a little math."
"The student and I did a portion of a practice test in his prep book. We came across several tricky problems that allowed us to review general concepts for SAT math and then apply them to some of the most difficult problems that he may see."
"The student and I had a very productive session today. She completed some SAT practice questions as homework. By applying the strategies we discussed during our last session, she got all of the critical reading passage-response questions correct. We discussed a few English and math questions, and she demonstrated that she understood the concepts we reviewed. During the last part of the session, I helped her review for her English class."
"We took some time to review the couple practice essays he had written. We talked about the importance of outlining and what other topics he might be able to pull essay support from. He had done chapter 5-6 in the SAT guide and was struggling with the longer passage-based reading, so we talked about strategies for note-taking while reading those and how to keep focused. He will do the Critical Reading practice in the guide so we can talk about that next meeting (Tuesday) as well as more essay outlines."
"We worked on the Diagnostic test from my PSAT book. We focused on critical reading for single and double fill-in-the-blank questions. Passage-based reading will come later. We also did some math problems, focusing on algebra and integers. The student stayed focused the whole time, and he has good algebra skills."
"Continued work on passage reading and questions. Reviewed two homework sections, student showed improvement in comprehension. Focused on breaking harder sentences into pieces and answering questions in own words first."
"We decided to spend the first few sessions doing and going over a practice test to establish a baseline. We began with a math section which the student completed and then we reviewed questions with which she struggled. In particular, we worked on problems involving proportions and word problems. Next we worked on a critical reading section. We reviewed some vocabulary terms for fill-in-the-blank questions and agreed that vocabulary was something that she should work on for the next session. We also discovered that she struggled with some of the reading passages and interpreting the questions. Lastly we worked on the essay section. We discussed the importance of specific examples and planned out a response to the practice test's essay question. We will pick up with writing the essay next time."
"We went over a practice test that the student did over the week. We started with critical reading, and I looked over her non-paragraph work. The issue here was mainly vocabulary, not logic as has been the case. We followed up by going over the math sections she did, and these went well. Her main issues in math were mainly in understanding the question and working through long problems. The next step was to go over her writing sections, and once again this went fairly well. We then went over a long paragraph that she had attempted, and I showed her how to break down questions and passages and look for big words. We ended with going over vocabulary, and I assigned her to do 40 words a day from a big list she printed out with 160 done by next time we meet besides encouraging her to read more often in her free time."
"This was my first session with the student. He was well-prepared for the tutoring session, and was able to provide his PSAT test scores (online) on request. Today we focused primarily on how to approach English and Math problems. We went over how to choose our own words to fit blanks, looking at the scope or meaning of each word to see if it fit the context, basic geometry and proportions, and how to solve 45-45-90 triangles. As of now, no work has yet been assigned other than reviewing the SAT vocabulary words which he can find online or with the SAT study guide cards. The next session is slated to be this coming Saturday,"
