Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we covered the student's homework. It was about number-lines and had a mix of fractions, decimals, percents, and a little bit of absolute value. He struggled a bit, but got the grasp of absolute value very quickly. I didn't leave him with extra practice as he is getting enough homework."
"The student worked on a timed science and a timed English section, and we reviewed the results and focused on the errors that she most commonly makes. We also discussed last minute concerns that she has before the test on Saturday. I instructed her to work on anything that made her the most nervous tomorrow and Thursday to feel polished before the test date."
"We went over some difficult science and reading passages in the ACT prep guide. Some questions that appeared hard the first time the student took the practice tests were easier this time, because she read the passages. I also looked over an essay from one of the practice tests that she did and pointed one or two minor spots for improvement."
"The student and I began the session by talking about some time saving strategies for her to use on all sections of the test. Then we went through a few example problems in the reading, science, and English sections, and went through a bunch of tips to help her answer questions correctly."
"Today, we practiced a writing prompt, which the student did expertly. We did not spend any more time on that, since she seemed to understand it so completely. We practiced more with the reading sections, which she excelled at when allowed to explain verbally. We practiced taking notes on the important parts of the passages. This helped her identify important sections of the passages, and it seemed to help her differentiate between "good" and "best" answers in a time crunch."
"The student and I worked on her remaining sections of a partially completed practice test. She did an excellent job as she was able to meet her goal score for the third consecutive practice test. At the end of the lesson, we discussed writing section strategies and how to create an effective essay for the ACT test. She did a great job in finding thesis points for her view in the essay!"
"The student has done very well on practice ACT essays, scoring consecutive 8s on the last two I have assigned. She also got a 24 on her practice Reading test, and she scored 20, 18, and 21, respectively, on English, Math, and Science, so we spent a lot of time going over those. I also gave her a crash course on basic trigonometry to cover the scope of the ACT's trig questions. She will complete one more practice test on her own to prepare for Saturday's test."
"The student and I continued our work with the SAT Science and Math sections. He's definitely been improving lately, particularly in his ability to break down unfamiliar math problems into familiar components (plane geometry, word problems, etc.)."
"This was our last session before the student's test on Saturday. We went over testing strategies again and a couple of problems she had starred so that we could go over those concepts. She also did a practice science section test, scoring 8 points higher than her previous score. Overall, she said she felt more confident this time around."
"The student and I worked on a few English problems and an entire Math section. We discussed different strategies for taking the test that he can employ to his best advantage. He is a very sharp young man and I have no doubt that he will improve his score on Saturday."
"We went over a brief introduction to the math portion of the ACT. We went through a practice exam covering in detail the concepts/formulas/etc. needed for the math exam. She did very well with knowing the concept needed but could work on speed during the exam. I instructed her to complete a diagnostic exam before next Tuesday."
"Before our session today, the student had worked through the rest of the reading section we began last time, so we began by going over that. After that, I had her work through two multiple choice math sections, on which she did very well. We also worked through an English section and two additional reading sections."
