Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In this session, the student was able to complete his homework with multiplying fractions and solving a perimeter/area problem with me. He was able to self-correct his homework involving multiplication/dividing/adding mix fractions and decimals. He has weaknesses in the areas of problem solving and identifying and writing the correct digit during computation. I suggested to him that he rewrite fractions when he sees them (2/4). I was not able to see any scores but present levels were discussed among him, his mother and myself. His last grade on his math test was a "C." I expressed to him to practice his multiplication facts because of the errors he made on his homework. We also explained to him to take his time while completing his math work. I explained to him that I would set him up on a computer math program for extra practice. Our next session will be on Feb 24th at 6pm."
"Today the student and I covered a chapter on vector-valued functions. We covered parametrization of vector functions, graphing the vectors, velocity and acceleration problems, and normal and tangent vectors. The most difficult topic was graphing the problems from just the parametrized equations. However, he seemed to be comfortable with the majority of this topic since it was very similar to the material on her last exam."
"Went over 2 sample t tests and other concepts. The student was simply concerned about knowing what situations required specific formulas of standard error. I showed her what situations called for which specific test as well as the details in each formula. We went over several practice problems to help cement what we reviewed. As far as the math is concerned, she has no problem. She still needs a little work remembering and explaining certain concepts and results in context. We reviewed how to make conclusions and what assumptions must be addressed when it comes to samples. She has a quiz on Tuesday."
"He has a math competition coming up so we worked on practice questions in probability and statistics, including fractions, mean & mode & median, and word problems with probability. I also reviewed some conversions of fractions to decimals to percent with him. He did really well and is working on math above his grade level."
"The student had a final coming up this Friday so this session was a comprehensive review for that final. She was given a review worksheet so that's what we worked on. First, the review sheet covered taking the definite/indefinite integral of various functions such as trig functions, quotient functions, exponential functions, etc. Taking these integrals involved using the u-substitution method, using partial fractions, or just integrating directly. Second, the worksheet covered whether an integral converges or diverges. Third, we evaluated some integrals to do with finding an area or volume that are bounded by 1 or more functions. Finally, we did a physics problem that required us to find the work done to remove a liquid out of a cylindrical container."
"The student is learning about imaginary numbers and polynomial factoring. She did not understand how to figure out real roots versus imaginary roots from the graph, so I showed how to read the graphs and use the real zeros to do the long division and factoring."
