His behavior and focus were not so good today €“ I just had to redirect his attention a lot, which I talked to him about €“ so he did not earn his possible extra sticker for that. But he did well on his reading and had good focus on the story, and completed everything needed, so we spent our last few minutes doing some origami from instructions that he had found and wanted help on. "
"Reviewed words with vowel clusters in the middle, reviewed beginning sound clusters. Worked again on compound words and practiced covering part of the word to make it more manageable. Finished by continuing work on her homemade books about her animal adventures. This was the last session."
"The student and I covered some more Geometry today, discussing area, polyhedrons, cones, spheres, surface area, volume, and parallel lines and transversals. This time there was more new material, but the student seemed to understand it with the right explanations."
"I began this session with the student by going over the results of the Math section of a practice test he did. We went through and covered the questions he missed and those that he got right. We then went over the Science section of his practice test. We walked through the problems he got incorrect and practiced extracting the necessary information from charts and graphs. I then had him practice the passages on the Science section in which the student has to compare and contrast two competing views on a topic. He improved with these drastically during the last part of our session."
"Kept working with the student through the practice test he took. I figure that Wednesday's session will cover mostly test taking tips and a review of the different ways to approach each section of test, as well as a few reminders about underlining parts of the question and which questions to omit."
"Today we finished chapter 7. We worked on all six trigonometric identities. We also learned the law of sines and cosines as well as individual formulas for the area of a triangle. We completed two quizzes and one test for this chapter. After completing chapter 7 we began working on the final chapter. We completed the first section of chapter 8."
"I went in with a worksheet of information as well as a couple of chapters in books to review with the student. We covered fractions and powers and roots. I brought a few practice problems so we spent the time just working a lot of fraction problems. I will send her more to work over the next week before I see her again. On the test that I had left with her, the next problems are those with quadratic equations so we'll cover that next week."
"The student and I reviewed geometry, which we had discussed during her last session, including angles of circles and triangles. We also completed a short lesson on converting fractions into decimals and percentages. We did several example word problems about calculating percentages. The student did superbly during the session; she caught on to the new topics quickly and remained attentive and interested throughout the session."
"The student and I went over his homework today which was about fractions and decimals. He had to count the blocks to interpret fractions and decimals and he did pretty well. Next, he had to do some mathematical relations with decimals, which he was strong in. We moved on to work on multiplying larger numbers (including double digits) using partial product methods; This was easy for him. He seems to understand the concept, so we continued to work with some fractions and chances (basic probabilities). Next time, we will move into some more advanced decimal work and fraction addition/subtraction."
"The student had a lot of homework today but she finished most of it during our session. In particular, her math homework was more challenging than usual. I taught her how to create factoring trees and she did well picking it up. I was pleased by what we were able to get done."
"The student and I have gotten into a pretty good rhythm during her sessions. We worked through her homework sheets, then moved on to the section review provided online by her textbook, and then I challenged her with some questions from an AP biology book. Because we still had time left after this, we then started discussing the next couple sections in her book to prepare her for this coming week of class. Topics covered include history of DNA discovery, DNA structure and replication, transcription, and translation."
"During this session, I had the student work on a few timed prewriting assignments, which we then discussed in order to strengthen her ability to organize and focus her writing. We also worked on some SAT vocabulary words."
