Jersey City Tutoring FAQ

How much does Varsity Tutors cost for students in Jersey City?

Tutoring for students in Jersey City doesn't come with a predetermined price. Instead, you'll receive a quote based on your unique needs.

For instance, if you'd like to prepare for the MCAT with a current medical school professor, you may receive a different quote than you would to review critical thinking and other skills with a student who recently aced their exam. Another potential factor may be the number of sessions you take part in. You may pay a lower rate for regular sessions throughout a course than to have your child improve their math skills before the ACT over a handful of lessons.

Tutoring review by Dana in Jersey City, NJ
The student and I started with an informal review of some of the vocabulary words she learned last week. Then, we decided to make flashcards to help her study the definitions. We created about 20 definitions and then went on the match them as she would need to do for a test. Next, we continued working on document based questions pertaining to the Missouri Compromise. We read the essay prompt which asked her to assess the idea that the Missouri Compromise was only a temporary solution for the problems between the North and the South. As we read the documents, I helped her by showing her ways to jot down quick notes on the sides of her primary sources. This helped her keep track of her sources and understand the language of the documents. After reading all of the sources, she started to write her essay. I explained to her what a proper thesis sentence was. After this, she was able to make a great introductory paragraph with an appropriate thesis sentence. I went on to help her with the writing skills she will need to write a document based essay. She completed three paragraphs of the essay and will type it for homework. She expressed that she felt more confident at the end of our session, which I was very happy to hear.

Tutoring review by Nasim in Jersey City, NJ
Our goal of this session was to prepare the student for her benchmark exam. We looked at range and domain, then we moved to interpreting the scattered plots. We spent most of the time on modifying two variable equations into the forma of slope-intercept format and also worked on plugging number in place of one variable to find the other variable. We will continue developing these skills during our next session.

The student's Math homework was still on Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Unlike Denominators - He had to complete a worksheet of 12 problems. Since we covered this last session I had him try to complete them on his own. He struggled with the concept of adding or subtracting with a whole number and a fraction. So I modeled a few examples and went over the strategy. The student was receptive and was able to complete the problems. Science - The student finished a foldable on Animal Group Characteristics.

Tutoring review by William in Jersey City, NJ
Today we went over counting concepts and combinatorics. We covered many applications of counting problems, and we also worked on how to simplify factorial expression. The student was not really struggling much, but some of the questions were a bit tricky, so we worked on how to identify the main idea of the question. He was very positive about the material, and he has enough practice problems to go over.

This session was mostly algebra/trig but we did look at a few questions for chemistry. In algebra/trig we looked at questions on factoring. In chemistry, we looked at a few concepts the student was confused about in his notes. Overall this session went well.

Tutoring review by Samuel in Jersey City, NJ
This session, I helped the student with an assignment to create a drawing using an online graphing calculator. I gave him basic rules for how to change the shape and position of basic lines and how to limit their range, then I guided him through making the functions he wanted. I also showed him how to make and move circles and ellipses with functions as well. By the end of the session, he had a good understanding of the shape of various functions and how to alter their shape and position.
