Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I reviewed his written response to an "issue" essay prompt taken from the GRE pool. This involved a deep analysis and criticism of the formulation of his arguments, the structure and organization of the essay itself, as well as some advice concerning writing style. I suggested ways to strengthen certain arguments, both formal and rhetorical. We then examined an argumentative essay prompt together, and after discussing and discovering issues presented in the prompt, set out to create a draft template of the essay itself. This involved extensive discussion of the way this essay should be structured, as well as how to comprehensively analyze both premises and conclusions. We spent the remaining quarter of class time reviewing vocabulary problems, at which the student excelled."
"Last reading comprehension practice for now, started on sentence equivalence and vocabulary, synonym and antonym patterning, etc."
"It seems like the student has been studying vocab quite consistently, I can tell he's improved, though he still has a lot of vocabulary to learn to reach the score he wants. We did several practice reading, text completion, and sentence equivalence questions together. As we talked through questions together, I tried to get him to explain the clues and steps he uses to break down a problem and make a choice. His goal is to take the test by mid-March. I told him that if he continues to study vocab consistently every day I believe he can reach his goal. As we continue to work together, I will assess if he is progressing at an appropriate rate to still reach this goal. We also went over the writing section and he is going to do a practice prompt for each of the writing tasks that we will go over together in our next session."
