Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We did additional practice work for Non-fiction exam prep. This topic will be the focus of our upcoming lessons as we try to prepare him for upcoming exams."
"The student used the first few minutes of the session to explain to me what he has been doing in school. He seemed excited to be participating in an event at school. He worked on his spelling words, not only spelling them, but also sorting them into the "long oo"/"short oo"/"oddball" categories. Additionally, he and I worked on punctuation, including comma usage in listing things and with conjunctions. He had an impressive understanding of his spelling words already, and he picked up on the comma usage rules fast."
"The student worked on assignments due Friday for his Reading project. He completed his vocabulary activity and worked on half of his Literature work. We read two chapters together as well. He was eager to participate and was able to answer all of the comprehension questions I gave him. Lastly, we worked on lower case letters, writing both upper and lower case letters, and reading new words."
"The student and I completed research for his paper as well as constructed points for each portion of the outline. We covered various methods to create content and source supporting info. He is recognizing more complex topics in writing and editing his work."
"Practiced writing a 5 sentence paragraph. The topic was "All about Me". The student did a nice job, used capitals and punctuation correctly. We also read and completed the story "Skippyjon Jones". Lastly, we worked on fractions, coloring and labeling the parts. She practiced recognizing what fractional part makes a whole."
"The student and I discussed thesis statements and pre-writing, specifically focusing on what gives her trouble when she is outlining. She initially felt she didn't have a strong grasp on thesis statement composition. We did two separate thesis exercises, concentrating on developing a formulaic "stance + 3 points" thesis from simple prompts (for the typical 5-paragraph essay). I also provided her with of my two handouts for outlining. I gave her a brief homework assignment: re-write her thesis statements for two of her previously graded school essays."
