Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we covered how to best find the answers to the paragraph questions of the reading sections of the SAT. The student was to underline where in the paragraph he found each answer."
"Reviewed essay writing and thesis construction. Learning advanced grammar rules and practiced the writing section."
"Covered the first 45 questions of an ACT math section. The student got 6 wrong. I believe she is in a good position to do well on the ACT."
"The student is ostensibly smart. I have rarely had a student arrive at the correct answer as quickly, logically, and accurately as he did in our first session. We reviewed the best approach for Reading and Science passages for him. He should be able to do well with practice. I have assigned additional Reading and Science passages for him to apply what we talked about."
"We began our first session by speaking broadly about the format and content of the new SAT, as well as some of the differences between the SAT and a typical in-class test. We then worked on some math problems, reviewing percentages, deriving equations from word problems, the equation of a circle, and SOHCAHTOA. We talked about how taking a single step forward on a math problem can lead to a greater understanding about the problem. Every step builds on the previous. We then turned to the reading section, discussing some tips for selective reading and for line-based reading. We finished with a little bit of review in the writing multiple choice section."
"The student and I began by discussing a universal essay strategy. We followed that up with some work on reading passages, mostly focusing on choosing passages to play to strengths and proving specific questions with information from the text. We ended with a brief bit of vocabulary practice."
"We spent most of the time going over the diagnostic math test the student took, as well as the problems from the practice book. He did well with lots of the review. Three big concepts to practice before the test are: division (DMSB), dividing fractions (invert and multiply), and finding the area of a triangle (1/2 base times height). Good luck!!! I have really enjoyed working with him."
"The student mainly wants help on the Critical Reading and Writing sections, so today we focused on Critical Reading. I had her do practice problems of all types. Her vocabulary knowledge could use a boost, so I suggested she download a flashcard app to help with her review. I also gave her a list of words that commonly appear on the SAT. She did pretty well on passage-based questions. Her biggest challenge came from questions asking how a word was used in context. We talked about some new strategies she can try when taking the test. For our next session, I asked her to review the vocabulary list I gave her. I also asked her to complete a practice test."
"Tonight, the student and I started by going over some sample verbal questions. Her vocabulary has steadily improved during our time together, and she answered most of the questions correctly. We then reviewed a few reading passages. I encouraged her to go back to the passage to find answers to the questions, since human memory is fragile and the passages are designed to be difficult."
"We went over different types of questions on the SAT that show up in each section (Critical Reading, Writing, Math) and explained the general SAT format. I also talked to the student about a few test taking strategies and good practices."
"The student and I worked through three SAT reading comprehension passages with a focus on understanding context and detail retention. We revised some of his previous strategies (namely, we worked on reading efficiently rather than skimming) and focused on process of elimination and splitting answer choices to reach the correct answer on questions related to author's purpose, argument, and evidence used. As the session progressed, he became more comfortable working through questions and determining correct answers. We also worked through a number of grammar and vocabulary questions. Our next session is scheduled for this Sunday."
"The student and I reviewed two passages of ACT English, ~ ten math problems, and one passage of ACT reading. She did well. We will be sure to practice/review Science when we meet again next Monday."
