Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In math, the student reviewed what he has learned about division and prime factoring. We then worked on reading more of his current summer reading novel, and we concluded by working on his writing and typing skills by developing a story about a lion."
"We covered multiplying a one digit number by any two digit number and multiplying two digit numbers by two digit numbers. We also practiced dividing and discovering the relationship between multiplication and division. Then we reviewed solving for an unknown number. The student understand division more than multiplication because it is easier for her to picture it. She is more fluent in multiplication when it is coupled with division practice. She has been practicing memorizing her multiplication tables and has improved tremendously. She still needs more practice with 6,7,8, and 9 tables."
"The student and I reviewed his homework assignment (online) and worked through the exponential equations, including determining domain and range for the equations. He seemed to be picking up the topics quickly."
"We covered more fundamentals of algebra such as exponents, order of operations and solving for a variable. Student did not struggle with anything and I left him practice questions for everything we covered. Next session I will begin helping him with his math home work assigned from school. We will also start leaning scientific notation."
"Today the student and I went over different methods for factoring binomials and trinomials. The student did very well with the material. She was very fluent with all of it. She also informed me during our session that she has an exam this week, which we worked on studying for by doing a few problems from each section in her textbook."
"I thought it would be best to introduce the 5th grade math content with place values. I administered a short place value quiz which included place values of six and seven digit numbers. The student had to identify specific place values, give standard form from expanded form. Student completed quiz with a 90% accuracy. I also administered a quiz comparing and ordering numbers through millions which was completed with 85% accuracy. The student did very well overall."
"The student and I worked on her physical science homework and algebra 2 review. We covered significant figures, scientific notation, inequalities, solving for a variable, and absolute value equalities/inequalities. We also talked about her need to take physical notes (kinetic learner) and ask her teachers questions when she doesn't understand something (taking responsibility for her own education). I look forward to seeing her notes and questions next week!"
"Instead of working on ACT Math, as we usually do, the student and I spent this session reviewing approximately 25 homework questions from his college algebra course. These questions incorporated topics such as factoring polynomials and manipulating exponents."
"During my meeting with the student today, we covered Algebra with a heavy emphasis on interpreting functional graphs. She was studying for a quiz that is taking place tomorrow and thus had me go through any questions she had on problems she had attempted previously. I did not see any sort of scores or grades, but she demonstrated great promise as a student. She had the most difficulty with word problems, but we worked together on how to properly interpret word problems and map out ways to tackle these kinds of problems. I did not leave her with any extra practice, and have no concerns from this session. I look forward to working with the student for many more weeks to come and helping her achieve her goals in this subject."
"The student is a joy to work with. He's very shy and sweet and very diligent while we work. He has been practicing expanded form and the work he's been doing on his own paid off during our session. We're also working on learning what words mean in the context of the sentence."
"Today the student and I had our first tutoring session. We covered the Review Questions and Practice Test for Chapter 1 in his Algebra 1 book which he has a test on Thursday. He was not struggling much with the questions, however, he solves the questions in his head very quickly which causes him to slightly overlook details in the questions, like round to the nearest tenth or choosing 2 answers instead of one. He also mentioned during the session that what he needs help on is problems for a math team, so we agreed that he would bring that workbook to next week's session and we can work on solving those problems."
"We mostly reviewed the chapter she currently is going over as she is preparing to take her first test of the semester this Thursday. We focused on points that she was a little uncertain about such as dividing decimals, absolute value integers, and solving simple variable substitution equations. I gave the student some extra practice sheets to go over the division problems and we were able to finish them together in our tutoring session. Overall, it was a great session!"
