Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I reviewed her most recent practice SAT. The section that she asked for help with was math, so we are going to tackle that section the most in our next session. For homework, rather than giving her another practice test, she should devote at least a half hour a day reading the big blue book."
"Scores from exams are increasing to 770-800, the score being a comfortable 800. The student has improved greatly since our first session. We went over more test taking strategies. She was left with a practice test, and I will be giving her 2 tests back to back so she knows exactly what she is in for when she actually takes the SAT Subject Test."
"The student finished the math and science sections from the practice tests, scoring about 22 on both of them. I advised her to always guess if she is not sure about a question because the ACT does not penalize incorrect answers. When we worked on problems together it seems like she can score much higher on the science section, accurately answering most questions and finishing with minutes to spare."
"The student was very engaged and already has a good study plan going. We went over mitosis/meiosis and drew out the processes to practice making the material stick, and discussed priority areas to study for next time. He will also take a full-length practice test under timed conditions for next week."
"We started with very basic elementary math. The goal was to refresh the student's memory and see what she remembered. She did well, it was just a matter of triggering that memory. I think we will be able to pick up the pace as we go."
"We reviewed Sentence Completion and Passage-Based Reading Strategies and I asked the student to do several Critical Reading sections from her SAT prep. There was a improvement in her performance in SC and PBR. Finally, I asked her to do a few more CR sections for next time under testing time constraints."
"She and I made it through almost an entire practice test worth of material. She knows her stuff pretty well and few mistakes were made. As this was a one-off session, I gave some study advice but will leave further guidance and evaluation to her recurrent in-person tutor."
"She and I worked on some algebra from the math section of the PSAT book, then spent the majority of the time on critical reading. For math, we talked about polynomials, including multiplying/dividing or adding entire expressions at a time, and systems of equations. She did some good work; next time I plan to get into word problems a little more deeply. She understands stoichiometry and dimensional analysis well, so once an equation is complete or mostly complete, she's good. She tells me she has been using flash cards daily and she had them at our session to practice. We went through a few dozen from her 500-card pack and I used some of the word roots from the PSAT book to help explain several."
"We started out talking about general strategies for the test and I suggested some ways of scheduling his daily studying. We then went over the critical reading section with emphasize on how to approach the questions and what key points to look out for in each type of question. We did this as we walked through some practice questions from the SAT guide. He was able to understand and apply the strategies we talked about pretty well."
"She and I went through the SAT book that I recommended to her, some of the writing and critical reading sections. We went over essay-writing strategies and practiced outlining some essays. We also went through the fill-in vocab practice sessions and started with the reading comprehension section. We began discussing tactics for both of these sections and will continue to do so next week. Before the next session, she will write some practice essays that we will then go over together."
"He and I covered SAT vocabulary in addition to completing various math problems. He successfully completed the majority of the questions and we analyzed the ones that were particularly challenging to him. For homework, I assigned a practice test to gauge his progress."
"He and I worked out of his ACT prep book. He did very well in getting answers correct. He will continue working in his practice book before our next session on Thursday."
