Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I finished working through her practice ACT Math section. The remaining problems went smoothly, except for a few advanced problems, which I explained the tricks of to the student. We concluded with a few general tips for how to be prepared tomorrow morning. Considering her impressive mathematical abilities, I think she will score very highly as long as she remains focused."
"We went over the English practice sections the student completed since our last meeting and discussed the questions she got wrong, as well as new approaches to certain types of questions that give her the most trouble."
"The student and I reviewed differentials of approximation and optimization using differentials. Her understanding of approximation and optimization using differentials was great. She was able to solve all of her assigned homework problems. I believe that she'll do well on her test on November 1st. Also, she got an A on her last test on maxima/minima extreme that I helped her study for."
"The student and I reviewed an acrostic poem for homework and went through some math word problems. We also read a book that I brought about a treasure map that he seemed to follow, and he was able to answer some comprehension questions at the end very well."
"We spent about half the session working on qui, quae, quod -- memorizing endings. I gave her suggestions on several ways to study to facilitate memorization, such as using flashcards for the different endings. The student made some progress, but still needs to do a lot of legwork to get the endings memorized and readily at hand. We also worked on producing passive forms in the present system. Again, she has a lot of work to do towards producing the forms quickly, but was making good progress today."
"Today during our meeting, the student and I went over some useful tips on taking the SAT. Afterwards, we went over some practice questions in the critical reading section, namely the sentence completion problems. For the words we did not know, we got a dictionary to look them up and made a list of these words with their definitions. We will continue to do this throughout our study sessions so as to build up his vocabulary. We also went over some math questions; Overall it went very well."
"Today we covered fluids, solids, pressure, and momentum. The student did a great job solving the questions. I would suggest that he try to memorize equations and comprehend the fundamentals of the physical science section before his test."
"The student and I worked on a science section from his practice test book. I got him into the mindset of cutting through tough jargon and simplifying the ideas contained in graphs and passages into his own words. Also showed him how outside knowledge can help on certain questions. Although outside knowledge is not required, it certainly can help. Also spent the last half hour on basic stat stuff like mean, median and mode."
"Session on 8/17: The student and I reviewed his previous homework. We spent a lot of the session discussing Fahrenheit 451 and aspects of graphic novel theory, which he found interesting. He plans to begin another reading soon. We, as usual, discussed plans for completing upcoming assignments, and made a schedule for the weekend to complete assignments before our next session on Monday."
"Worked through the final two problems of the homework set, both of which were pulled directly from the first exam. The first dealt with the thermodynamics of a given reaction, while the second dealt with deriving expressions from a given pressure/volume diagram."
"Today we continued to work through the biology summer assignment by watching and summarizing a video. We spent the remainder of the time working on math problems related to finding slope."
"At last night's session, we: - completed and reviewed exercise on identifying simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences - developed introduction paragraph including thesis for a point-of-view essay on Will Parker."
