Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student continued to work on SAT math. He is showing progress on identifying the problem type and applying a strategy. We also covered the free response math questions and some strategies around how to transition from multiple choice to free-response questions. After our session I met with the student's parents to discuss his progress. We emphasized the need to think through the problems before just diving in. Also, we agreed that more focus should be placed on reading going forward."
"The student and I worked on his essay and made some changes to the final draft. We then started studying for his test on Monday. We made notecards for the first 3 sections to help him study, and he is going to make cards for the last 3 sections over the next couple of days. "
"Today the student needed help with an essay for her writing class. The essay was supposed to be a comparison of how two memoirs used a concept called "magical thinking." We talked through what this concept is, what both books are about, and how they use it. We discussed basic essay structure and what a thesis should be. All that was due tomorrow was a thesis, so we spent a long time talking about that and how to craft a really good one. Then he went through and made an outline, drafting the basic structure of the essay and writing topic sentences for the body paragraphs."
"The student and I reviewed the 19 rules of English grammar from the ACT study guide. We then worked on a specific passage related to those 19 rules. He then completed timed sections from the ACT study guide of 18 minutes for 2 passages followed by 27 minutes for 3 passages. We corrected the answers together and reviewed the reasons why the ones he marked incorrectly were considered incorrect."
"The student completed a practice test for "Fighting Ground." He did well on the objective portion of the test, much improved from the practice quizzes. We worked repeatedly on his "essay" question answer, both written and verbally. He seems to have the main ideas of the topic. We completed a final review of figures of speech for his test. He did extremely well on this part, having improved greatly in the last few weeks and months."
"He seemed a lot more eager to learn this session. We went over line forms and intercepts again and I felt like he really understood thoroughly. Also, we went over density for his science test this week and I felt he really comprehended the material well."
"Organized and studied the student notes on UTOPIA--he taught me the subject material. Reviewed his poetry homework, analyzing a poem and answering questions. Went over notes on MACBETH. Read the final act of MACBETH together and summarized the scenes."
"Today we did a quick review of the comma worksheet I assigned and discussed dependent and independent clauses. Then we spent the majority of the lesson reviewing the math section that he did for practice. As we worked on this section, I asked him to underline the answer he is looking for in the problem and to check that he got that answer by using tracking units. Finally, we returned to the English section of the test and worked through that, identifying topics we will work on in future sessions."
"Chemistry- discussed crystal structure and size trends in the periodic table. Social Studies- brainstormed ideas for project related to the ethics of European colonialism. General- looked at the school website and discussed organization of student's tasks."
"I had the student complete SAT sections in the time that would be given to her during the actual exam for practice. We will focus on writing and timing in our last session before we move to preparing her for the ACT."
"In this session, the student and I went over a homework assignment given to him in school. It involved adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. We did a couple of exercises and he finished the homework. We also went over dividing numbers that result in answers with decimal points. Mean, median, and mode concepts were covered, and I gave a worksheet dealing with those concepts due on our next session. I saw a lot of progress on his focus. He got excited that he was understanding everything. I left him once again, with the fractions homework because although he did show work, he didn't do all the steps. Overall, this was a great session."
"Today was a big day for concepts. We covered: 1) Photoelectric Effect 2) London Dispersion Forces and other intermolecular forces 3) Capacitance and cells 4) Net force 5) Fundamental Forces 6) Different Types of Cells 7) Endocrine System. HW: Read and review the rest of the chapters, read pgs. 21-97 in VR Notes, do problem set I will send."
