Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We worked on linear algebra, namely the technique of row reduction, by which you can solve arbitrarily large systems of linear equations. Towards the end of the session, I introduced matrix multiplication, and how row operations are really the same thing as multiplication by an elementary matrix, and introduced the idea of the identity matrix and inverses. We'll work more on finding inverses next session."
"We worked on test corrections dealing with addition/subtraction of algebraic fractions the entire session. The student did a great job starting the problems and solving close to the end. She understands combining like terms and making the denominators the same in order to compute fractions. Factoring out the numerator to cancel out the denominator or part of the denominator was the challenging part as well as knowing if the numerator was factorable or not. To help with that, I showed her to either use the parts in the denominator of the problem as factors for the numerator or to focus in on the first and last term of an equation to know what to factor out. Throughout our session, she expressed that she was getting the material and feeling more confident, which she is. She's definitely starting to get the hang of these types of problems, and with more practice, the factoring will improve too."
"The student had a math quiz on Thursday, so we spent the session reviewing for it. The chapter is an introduction to statistics and measures of central tendency, so we went through and discussed line plots, stem and leaf plots, mean/median/mode/range calculation, and how to tell if a graph is positively or negatively shaped. I gave him some real world connections to the statistics I do in graduate school, which I think helped him see how important the lessons are. We did multiple practice problems in each section, and he got everything right on the first try. I left him with a few more problems he could practice to prepare for the quiz."
"Today, we worked on the review packet. The student has a quiz on Tuesday, and we worked on the topics from trigonometry like finding the linear speed, finding exact value of the trigonometric functions, etc."
"Today, we reviewed the student's quizzes on equations and graphing on an x-y plot. He has had significant improvement since our last session. In the next part of our session, we focused on his multiplication. Together, we made a set of multiplication tables from 0-12. He should be reviewing these at home during the week, and we will review them during our next session. At the conclusion of our session, we did a timed mock quiz on graphing and equations (similar to the quizzes he takes in class). He performed very well, only making one very minor error in one of his graphing points. Though he did well, he still needs to work on writing out his work and not doing all the math in his head. Also, we need to work on checking our work before completing/turning in an assignment."
"Today, we went over the definitions of sine, cosine, and tangent using the unit circle. After this review, we covered the law of sines and cosines and their application. We used these laws to find the missing sides of triangles and the missing side of a quadrilateral."
