Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered permutations, combinations, probability, and conversions. The student needed help with conversions at first, and was getting them by the end of the session. He knew the material well, and mostly just needed practice. The strategy known as error carried forward was covered."
"We covered several different versions of factoring, including factoring out monomials, factoring trinomials into binomials, factor by grouping, and difference of squares. The student's teacher had emailed the parents with a list of chapters they were going to cover for the upcoming week. We were able to review all topics during our session. The student was able to grasp all the concepts. He had a positive attitude and was willing to work and try each of the problems we covered. While we worked on several sheets of paper, we also created 4 study sheets that he used to refer back to when attempting the problem. He kept the sheets to use in class."
"Today the student and I worked on his biology midterm review packet. He has a midterm next week and his teacher gave him a packet that overviews every topic that will be on the test. He did a really good job answering the questions on his own. He asked for help on only a few questions which I was able to help him on. He seems much more confident in biology and I think with one more review session he should be solid for his midterm."
"The student's test is on Tuesday, so today's session focused on reviewing her weekend homework so that on Sunday we could work on prep for her test. Her grade has moved up a letter grade since we started working together, and this is encouraging to hear. I feel that she is getting over her shyness and is engaging with the material more. She appears to have great study habits, as she is usually halfway done or more with her homework when we meet. Tuesday's test should not be an issue for her. I told her to spend some time creating her formula sheet, as this will provide her with a review of the material."
"We started by reviewing the student's worksheet on ratios and proportions. She was unfamiliar with the process at first, but as we got some practice in, she felt more comfortable with the approach. She needs to brush up a little bit on one/two-step algebra, but it was coming back to her quickly enough. I will send her additional practice so she can solidify these skills. For the remainder of the session, we dove into biology and reviewed concepts in molecular genetics (DNA structure, central dogma of biology). The student was able to show a better understanding after we went through the concepts, and I referred her to some videos and material that can help her going forward."
"The student and I discussed perspective difference between gross profit margin and net profit margin. We calculated gross and net margin for hypothetical sales reports and return on equity. We approached the Cartesian coordinate system and located points in x,y plane. We determined the distance between points on the same axis and found the equation of a line passing through two given points."
