Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student had a good day today. She felt good about the test Friday. We went over the scansion of lines 1-11 to prepare for next week's recitation, and we read through most of her homework for tomorrow, the introduction of Pyrrhus in book 2. I gave her some background information as well. Good day."
"This session we finished the translation passage we were working on last session. The end of the passage used grammatical structures such as subjunctive verbs, conditionals, and relative pronouns and clauses. These subordinating grammatical structures prompted us to discuss how to identify subordinate clauses as a translation strategy. We also continued to review translation strategies as usual, and worked through specific questions the student had regarding the use and translation of participles. Again, he had difficulty translating according to Latin grammar, rather than according to the individual English meaning of words. However, after reviewing the concepts I asked him to study the other day, he did seem more comfortable with basic grammar. We will continue to work on this. This session, I asked him to continue to review the memorization topics from last session, to review the gerund/gerundive and participles, and to memorize reflexive pronouns."
"This session, the student finished his monster assignment, editing what he had already written and adding another two sentences to increase length and include a change of tense. Then, we discussed and outlined his Nero essay, focusing on the thesis statement. The student had many details to contribute to this outline, and this should make for a very interesting paper. For next time, he will finish writing the Nero paper and we will edit this together. I am sending along a review sheet with the vocabulary we went over for the monster assignment. Excellent work!"
