"The student and I worked on surface area and volume problems today. The student had absolutely no issue with any of the problems. There were some conceptual questions about scale factors in both volume and surface area equations, as well as the ratio of SA to volume when scaling by some factor. The student, with little to no guidance from me, was able to properly deduce that the scale factor is equivalent to the SA:volume ratio."
"Today we went over proofs of equality of internal or external tangential segments of two circles of unequal radii. Proofs included the property of tangents of being perpendicular to the corresponding radius of the circle. Also, a new strategy was the parallel shift of the tangent into the circle which enabled use of a right triangle including radius, and distance between the circles. Student has gained confidence in her independently finishing her homework. Extra exercises that we were unable to finish will be left for student's consultation with the teacher tomorrow. Student has reported her recent increase in GPA."
"The student has finished the Algebra I portion of his math class and now will be working on the Geometry portion of the class. The current topic is an introduction to trig functions used to solve triangles. Topics include Pythagorean theorem, Pythagorean triples, SOH-CAH-TOA, inverse trig functions and the application of these topics to word problems. We spent a good amount of time on using GCF to identify triangles with sides that are multiples of the Pythagorean triples. Lastly, we worked with problems that dealt with angles of depression vs angles of elevation."
"The student and I reviewed the transformations of the parabola, including translation of the vertices, compression/stretch of the parabola, and reflection across the x/y-axis. Then, we solved for the solutions of the quadratic equation by completing the squares. We also went over the rate of change of the parabola by finding the two coordinates of an interval and applying the slope formula. Lastly, we finished by reviewing the application of the discriminant and solving a word problem involving the area and perimeter of the rectangles. She seemed to know most of the material. She needed clarification sometimes on the details of transformation, but she seemed to know the process of completing the squares very well. We will meet at 7pm tomorrow. She has an assessment on Friday, and our plan is to meet tomorrow and again on Thursday to catch up."
"Today, we looked at the volume of a sphere and hemisphere. We also looked at problems that were composites of 3D objects. The student sometimes struggles between recognizing which dimension a question is asking about, but showed great improvement in memorizing the various volume equations!"
"We got a lot done tonight. We finished 3 weeks of algebra review. The student needs some more work with linear functions and distribution, but he did well. We also worked on a worksheet using parallel lines with transversals. He struggled a bit with where you can rewrite angles in such an occurrence. I will revisit that next week."
