Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Prior to our session, the student had completed his math homework but did not check it. I reviewed his answers and found two errors. Not indicating where these errors occurred, he found and corrected these mistakes. After math, we worked on finishing his chapter review in science. While he finished his review, I added specific questions to the study guide to help direct his attention to important facts. After modeling how to flesh out a study guide, I will have the student do this step in the future. We also discussed his performance on tests, and he believes he has test anxiety. I suggested that studying will help boost his confidence and alleviate anxiety. If he completes the study guide, I believe he will perform well on his test."
"Today the student had a progress report. Based on her current grades, I believe the areas we need to focus on most are math and social studies. We discussed her grades and she is feeling more confident on the current social studies section. We plan on trying some new techniques to study for the next exams to make sure she is prepared. For math, we first focused on her homework for the day. Finding percentages of numbers and calculating percentages from proportions. Overall she did well, and as long as she takes her time she is able to complete the work accurately. I then had her work on some worksheets I brought. The first one focused on the same concepts as her homework. We then did one that focused on solving for a variable in a proportion. She seems to be getting the hang of the cross-multiplication method and is definitely improving. I will keep bringing work for her to practice with. We also completed her spelling homework and she was already doing very well with this week's words!"
"We covered algebraic expressions with addition and subtraction, order of operations, and relating word form to algebraic expressions. The student's biggest obstacle is vocabulary and the English language. We are doing extensive vocabulary work to help him progress and be able to understand word problems. The student is motivated, focused, and has a positive attitude."
"The student stated that his recent chemistry exam went well. He has not yet received his grade for it, but felt that he did do well. We worked on arithmetic and geometric series for the entire session, and I will be sending him more problems for review."
"We reviewed the student's math study guide. Her biggest problems are word problems and showing her work. I am teaching her various word problem techniques that we will review again next time. In addition, I am making her practice showing all her work and double checking her answers. I think good progress has been made!"
"The student and I worked on short story and poetry units today. She answered questions about a extended short story and its plot elements. She got 5/6 on the quiz, and the reading was tricky, so that was good! We then read "Paul Revere's Ride," and she answered questions about poetry elements and samples from the story. She did even better on these activities. We had a lot of tricky activities today, that could be heavily opinion based, but she was able to hold her judgement ground and pick the correct "technical" answers for the most part. We began reading a unit on Anne Frank and will continue there on Tuesday."
