Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student is taking the SAT this weekend, so I brought a review of all question types, to rehearse strategies and review concept. His confidence has improved quite a bit from the time we began. Scheduled one more session before the exam for a final review."
"The student completed two sets of "compare two long passages" questions, which are the problem type he's had the most challenges on. We talked about getting a feeling for which questions to skip, when no answers stick out right away for selection or elimination, to help make up time. He will time and score himself on each problem set of a section for review in our next session."
"The student and I started with a quick diagnostic to see where he currently is on the content, then spent a lot of the time looking at those problems and focusing on some of the initial content areas. We'll continue that and move into higher level content tomorrow."
"We focused a lot on geometry today. The student struggled a bit with coordinate geometry, but he's feeling more confident about it now that we've gone over it. We also worked on similar figures and Pythagorean theorem. Then we did critical reading and sentence completions."
"The student and I discussed the difference between a simile and metaphor. We looked up the definitions of each and then research how a simile is different from a metaphor. Went back to our text and discussed the question and the correct response. He read passages from a book and a poem. He answered questions and used appropriate test taking strategies. We analyzed the poem and the vocabulary. Only concerns were vocabulary terms, alliteration, personification and melancholy. He and I looked up these words in the dictionary and he read them aloud and we discussed their meaning."
"The student did a good job on her vocabulary quiz. We spent the rest of the session going through math problems methodically, delineating her course of action, and executing. She seemed to have an easier time with the questions toward the end of the section. Understanding what the problem is asking her is the most important thing to focus on."
"We started off by reviewing the last practice test that I had the student take. We then worked through more difficult problems, and I went over strategies and methods of solving harder problems more quickly. I then had him finish up with a shorter 40 minute practice test."
"The student and I started the session by going over some vocabulary words. We then moved on to some passage-based reading questions. We then worked on some of the grammar. We worked some on math questions after that. Finally, I showed him how to work combinatoric questions and averages questions which should definitely boost his math score when he takes the SAT. His homework is to look up the most common SAT words and to take another practice test."
"In our final session before his Saturday test date, the student and I focused on the Reading portion of the test. He completed three practice sections and we discussed strategies for answering questions. We discussed test day techniques and strategies."
"The student and I worked through two passages of ACT reading. He is improving in his ability to understand what an author is trying to convey as a message. His English grade is also improving, as the English books and passages he is working through are easier to comprehend then the ACT reading."
"The student and I went over her chemistry homework (pH and neutralization equations) after having gone through the SAT writing multiple choice questions. I asked her to finish practice test number 2 in her book. She will be taking her first SAT this weekend."
"The student and I wrapped up geometry and began the critical reading. It looks like we will have to work more on the reading section, but she is very determined. Her SAT is this Sunday, and I advise her to try a practice test before that."
