"The student and I worked on reading tonight. He worked on a short passage and a long passage, answering questions related to each passage. He did fairly well on the short passage questions but is still having difficulty with the sequencing within a story and answering questions related to it. He did fairly well with the longer passage and comprehending most of the story, because his fluency has improved. He was able to answer these questions with more certainty. After reading, we played a multiplication war flash card game. He did well and made few mistakes with his facts."
"The student and I covered reading comprehension and vocabulary for his end of year exam. His main focus today was with vocabulary. He approached the material with a very open mind and seemed happy when he understood what he was reading. As a study tool, we made a list of words that he did not know from the passage we read, and then I had him write a definition for each in his own words. At the end of the session I asked him to tell his parents about what he learned in the passage (dominant and recessive genes, and traits), and he explained what he learned very well. Future focus will stay on developing his vocabulary, as well as practicing how to answer questions about the passages."
"The student and I primarily worked on reading skills today. Using his school book, we read a story about a farmer's family. After we flipped each page, I asked him questions to quiz him on the reading, which was a great comprehension exercise. I also wrote down unfamiliar vocabulary words, which we went over after, and he put those words into sentences as practice. We caught up on his English and Spelling homework by having him complete a vocabulary worksheet, and writing sentences with new vocabulary words. I'm definitely seeing an improvement in his reading comprehension and penmanship skills."
