Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I had a very productive session. She has all the fundamentals down, and simply needs to be refreshed on the material. I look forward to our next meeting!"
"We did the student's geometry homework (finding areas), then studied all study guides for tomorrow's biology test on the skeletal system. He has two writing projects in different stages of writing: English, which required he research sources online about Bob Marley, and Public Speech, which required him to fill out an outline about Nirvana and then write an essay. Since he had so much computer work ahead, we finished with his DRP."
"The student and I checked over her homework. She finished all the Math within the time frame and 1 out of the 3 passages in the time frame. We then did some more English practice and started Reading practice. She is going to read the section that covers grammar in an ACT prep book that I have. Also she is going to take the 1st practice test this weekend. "
"We worked through the section in book and corresponding homework. Problems centered around multiplication of fractions, whole numbers and mixed numbers. The student had some confusion re: mixed numbers versus a whole number multiplied by a fraction but this was reviewed until complete understanding was achieved. Also had some difficulty distinguishing between multiplication and addition on word problems so we reviewed this some and will continue to do so moving forward."
"Today was completely focused on the reading section. Content wise he's perfectly fine. He does better with the natural sciences and social sciences' readings so we've decided that he'll start with those readings and then move to the humanities and fiction readings to utilize his time most effectively."
"The student took the SAT on Saturday. I gave her a practice math test last week to do as prep, so we went over that. We're now going back over the science portion of the ACT (she's retaking it later this month)."
"The student is preparing to take the ACT. For this session, we discussed a little of how the ACT is structured and focused on a sample grammar test from a practice ACT. We walked through a series of questions together, discussing the answers and reviewing some grammar rules as we went. The student and I also talked a little about how we might like to approach our sessions. The plan for now is to work through a section of the test together each time we meet. This should help familiarize him with the format of the test as well as the types of questions that will be asked."
"We planned for the student's future education today. Based on the schools he wants to go to and the degrees he is interested in, we looked at the best plan for what he can be doing right now to prepare himself, namely which exams and community college courses to take and what types of side research and science projects he can do to keep his creative mind actively engaged with new engineering ideas."
"Instructor and student practiced a dialogue together from the first chapter of a textbook which instructor supplied for student ("Ven con nosotros!"). Instructor also introduced student to grammar text and conversation manual, and assigned sections from each of these for student to review. Finally, instructor and student listened to (and sang) songs: "No tengo dinero" and "Amar y querer" to practice pronunciation and verbal facility."
"Focused on English and Science portion this time. Did very well on English, and finished with time remaining while giving accurate responses. Science portion still needs a little work, but we went over methods on how to optimize the time given and keywords to look for in passages."
"We went over a packet of homework due this wed. It was on potential and kinetic energy and its conservation. The last few problems used momentum conservation. I will make sure to check the algebra of the student in future sessions."
"For this session, we previewed the novel, "The Canterbury Tales." The student wanted to become more familiar with the contents of the novel. We talked about the introduction and the first story, "The Knight's Tale.""
