Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"For this session, the student and I worked through her homework assignment on solving radical expressions and determine extraneous values. She was able to solve the majority of the problems without errors and had a good grasp of the material. I had her always check her answer by substitution into the original equation or by using FOIL to check factors of polynomials. She again did very well with the material and was able to reach the answer with minimal errors."
"We went over the student's homework which consisted of factoring quadratic equations. We also discussed finding max and least area when given the perimeter of a rectangle in a quadratic graph and vice versa. Then we worked on some other factoring practice problems."
"The student is a smart kid who is able to do a lot of computations in his head. We worked on a number of practice problems involving logarithmic equations. I think we made progress. He was adept at setting the problem up appropriately."
"The student was working on inequality and equations. I got him started ahead on his Algebra curriculum to prepare him for the week. We covered functions and graphing. We also did a few assessment exam problems, and he did great. We only covered what he has been taught. A lot of the questions have not been covered in his class, so we will save those for later. He is very bright and thinks very quickly on his feet. He is also very motivated to work hard. I left him with plenty of homework for next week. I really enjoy working with him, and I am very impressed with his math skills."
"Today, the student and I worked on algebraic word problems, particularly word problems dealing with money like finding the number of quarters, nickels and dimes and also finding the price and the number of items sold/ bought. I thought he struggled a bit setting up the expressions and then the equation in the beginning but he did show improvement as he worked on more problems. Still, I think he would need more practice with this, especially with the challenge word problems in the textbook. He showed me his quiz score where he got 80%. The mistakes he made were calculation mistakes. He did got partial credit for setting the equation up right and stating the correct steps to solving it. However because of those arithmetic mistakes he got the wrong answer. One example was where he did 17 X 4 and got 61 instead of 68. He wasn't allowed to use a calculator for the quiz but is allowed to use it for the test this week. He needs to watch out for those simple mistakes. He did excellently with the word problems in the quiz. Overall, I thought he did better during the session when he practiced doing similar word problems and had an understanding of setting the equation. He didn't show any issues solving the equation. He did a great job with that."
"We went over the student's reviews and some of his algebra project. He did not have any problem with Algebra concepts. At the end of the session, we agreed to section our sessions into reviews of old materials, study of new materials, and some test practices and challenges. I did leave him a few assignments: to summarize a couple of new strategies we learned today and to create a study guide for himself."
