Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I worked with the student primarily on long division and long multiplication. We focused primarily with large divisors and remainders."
"Describing and calculating functions. Understanding the types of function based on the equations. Identifying changes in functions and graphing results. Deriving combined functions with variables."
"Worked with Student A on Matrix operations. He understands the general concept, but has some difficulties with keeping the numbers straight. Worked with Student B on his Algebra coursework. Definitely seeing progress on his part. He is understanding the concepts a lot better."
"During this session, I helped him with reviewing his English Math homework. The homework required identifying the factors for various numbers. He feels comfortable with identifying the factors that he knows by memory. However, when he arrives at factors of 6, 7, and 8, he does not know if these are factors of the number at hand. I have suggested that he uses long division in these cases, and I'll be stressing this technique in the next session as well. He did remember from our last session that any two digit number with digits that add to 9 has a factor of 9. The homework problems that he finds the most difficult are the word problems. We worked on slowly reading through the word problem and converting it into math terminology. At the end of the session we used M&Ms to review fractions. He was very successful in answering the questions I devised for looking at the different colors in terms of fractions."
"She had a worksheet for homework that covered operations with decimals. The worksheet was challenging for her because each question was written as a word problem. I helped her to look for words indicating the operation to be performed (difference, total, times, etc.). She did great with all of the actual operations once the problems were set up. She took my advice of lining up the decimals when adding/subtracting and adding extra 0's to make sure they all had the same number of digits after the decimal. Her multiplying was perfect and in dividing she did very well, just a little hesitant when she needed to add extra 0's to bring down."
"We covered optimization, finding the relative maxima, minima, and saddle points of a 2 variable complex function, and conducting matrix operations on a graphing calculator. The student just needed somebody to help him here and there. The student had a very positive attitude and a high willingness to learn the material. We were able to complete the practice mid-term, which is supposed to be very similar to the actual mid-term, in order to prepare for the test."
