Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today I worked with Student 1 on some math vocabulary related to sets of numbers. We also did some review work on percentages. For student 2, we took a look at his language arts assignment and reviewed the vocabulary."
"Math - went over Pythagorean theorem problems from last week's quiz. Science - went over concept of forces, acceleration and constant motion and Newton's first law."
"Reviewed with the student another homework assignment on linear equations and graphs. Also reviewed five vocabulary words and discussed the definitions of nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs."
"Our primary focus today was on showing the relationship between a word problem, a system of algebraic equations, and what solving them really means. We solved basic linear equations by guessing, by substituting, by simultaneous solution, and by graphing to understand the relationship of these things. He did better and better as we did more, and he liked doing this when he understood it--he likes math when he has success. He wanted to work on the difference between surface area, area, perimeter, and volume, since he remembered having trouble with that last school year. We drew some three-dimensional objects and made up some lengths and worked on this for the rest off the session. We will work on these same ideas next time using his study packet from school."
"The student and I discussed the results and next steps for the meta analysis. The results were gathered by using a log transformation on the original OR and RR results. More recently, variances of the pooled estimates were calculated using an accepted sample variance estimate for weighted averages. The results were then used to make a 95% confidence interval on the log-scale, which were then exponentiated to produce confidence intervals on the original scale. She is going to forward me an article related to her area of focus, and I will be creating and sending her a short write up of the methodology used so far, as well as creating (if easily possible) STATA code for creating a forest plot for the data."
"We continued going over the practice problems provided by the professor. The concepts covered were present and future value. The student grasped the concepts very well, and with practice it will become second nature for her. In the next session we will go on to the next part of the practice problems."
