Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We started out by working on a worksheet asked for the x-intercepts of a polynomial today. We used the quadratic equation to solve for the intercepts. We worked through the problems without a calculator so that he could practice using the quadratic equation, and then we used the calculator to check his answers. The second worksheet focused on finding the vertex of a parabola and the y-intercept, and then graphing the parabola. He was able to do these problems easily with only a little guidance. We also discussed the difference between conductors and insulators, and why different materials make better conductors or insulators based on their atomic structure."
"Today we reviewed all the subjects on the student's test last week, including factoring trinomials, factoring by grouping, difference of squares, sum/difference of cubes, and graphing quadratics. I've offered to write practice problems for her to work on between sessions. She has a good attitude during our lessons."
"We reviewed the student's most recent exam (83% - an improvement according to the student's mother) and went over missed points. We then started reviewing for the upcoming exam, which focuses mainly on solving systems of equations with 2 variables. Her next exam is Thursday."
"In order to prepare for a test this week, the student had practice problems on solving simultaneous equations from graphing the individual lines, solving by elimination, and solving by substitution. She did quite well on this material and should do fine on the test. A couple of things for her to remember are the distributive property and the signs. We also found the missing y value in a linear equation when she was given the x value. In addition she solved equations for y in order to use the substitution process."
"We completed a review sheet together that will count for a grade in Unit 4. Topics included linear functions - graphing, calculating slope, applications; linear inequalities; absolute value functions and their graphs. I brought extra materials to practice with the student involving slope formula, creating linear functions from word problems, and various applications of the linear function. We worked on decoding the word problems and she appears to be improving. I am confident that when we meet regularly her grades will improve since I can show her all the little tips and tricks that might be lost during class instruction time and I can't wait for her to feel confident as well!"
"Today the student and I worked on her English journal entries. We read two short stories together and then wrote two journal entries describing the story and hope the story made the reader feel. She did really well with the journal entries. After the entries, we looked over notes from her Trigonometry class."
