Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we talked about limits and continuity, and how limits are used to determine if a function is continuous. We covered some examples, including piecewise functions and trig functions. We talked about infinite discontinuities (asymptotes) and point discontinuities (holes), as well as limits that are undefined due to oscillation. I gave her some tips on evaluating continuity and limits, including graphing the function with a calculator and using a practical application of the formal definition of the limit -- checking a function f(x) at x = c +/- .01 and/or x= c +/- .001, etc. -- to help determine if a limit exists. At the end of the session, she seemed a lot more comfortable with the material. I recommended doing extra problems from the book if she would like more practice."
"The student is getting started in calculus. We reviewed topics related to graphing in preparation for her first exam."
"We started today by identifying graphs. We also worked on the power rule, product rule, and quotient rule of derivatives, and derivatives of trigonometric functions. We finished the session working on applications of derivatives on applied problems of speed, velocity, and acceleration. She is doing well and is focusing more on the application of calculus."
"The student and I covered more examples of limits as well as solving problems using limit laws. She understands all of the material so far and seems confident with it. We went over plotting functions without just plotting points."
"The student and I worked on derivatives, max and mins, local extrema, and first and second derivative tests."
"Today we covered the definition of limits and continuity. For definition of limits, we found a value of delta for a value of epsilon. We did this by looking at the inequality for epsilon and manipulating it to get just an absolute value of x. The student understood these concepts fairly well. We also learned to look at an equation of a function and state whether it is continuous or not. He was eager to learn the material. Overall, assigning him certain concepts to learn has been helpful. He understands calculus better."
