"We started off working with piecewise functions. The student is comfortable going from a set of equations to a graph, but was having trouble generating the equations of a piecewise function. We went through several word problems and practiced picking out the dependent and independent variables, determining intervals for the independent variable, and creating the equations for the different intervals. We also looked at quadratic equations and practiced sketching them from the three different forms of the equation. We looked at how to find the vertex from each form of a quadratic equation and how to find two more points in order to sketch the graph. Since her class just started this topic, she was only comfortable finding the vertex from the standard form, so we focused on finding the y-intercept from the standard form as well as finding the vertex and two other points from the vertex and x-intercept forms. We also did a quick review on factoring the difference of squares binomial in order to put a quadratic equation into the x-intercept form. Lastly, we looked over her special project for piecewise functions regarding car insurance. We were able to figure out in general what the graph would look like and what the horizontal and vertical axes would be measuring."
