"Today the student and I worked a lot in the reading section and went through several problems in the math and writing sections. She has improved most on the reading section of the SAT now that we have found strategies that suit her attention. She is continuing to do well in writing. I think she does well in math, but makes a lot of simple errors due to not writing anything, and trying to do everything in her head. We were able to put into action the "mind-clearing" techniques that she can use on the test to recharge after a difficult section."
"Upon my initial meeting with the student, she informed me of her past attempt at taking the SAT and how she hoped to improve her overall score this time around, especially by focusing on improving her math and vocabulary skills. In order to gauge her initial aptitude, I had her take a diagnostic test based on four selected sections of a full SAT practice test: the essay section, the first and second mathematics sections, and the first and second reading sections. I simulated test conditions by timing each section. I plan to grade the test prior to our next meeting on Friday, and use the results to create a targeted plan for focusing our future sessions."
"We spent a little time talking about his study strategies, which he admits are lacking. We tried coming up with a few different strategies, and maybe finding a place to study where he won't be distracted by classmates and where he can turn off all his technology. We spent the rest of the time doing passage-based reading comprehension questions. He did pretty well and it's a good way to learn vocabulary in context. He will need to review on his own. I assigned him vocabulary words to study for tomorrow. Since math comes easier to him, I suggested doing a math section as a "break" from the more intense reading/writing practice."
