Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Now that he has obtained an SAT study guide in addition to the ACT book he already had, we were able to focus more on SAT specific reading skills. In particular, we worked on sentence completion questions and vocabulary enrichment by taking a prefix and word-root based approach. We also worked more on paired passages and the strategies specific to them. I'm very proud of his progress. He finished each passage and the sentence completion questions with multiple minutes to spare. As homework, I asked him to complete a prefix and word-root based exercise."
"The student and I worked on some math questions, including some on different types of geometry. She seems to be getting a hang of how to answer these questions which will be good for when she takes the SAT. We looked at some of the verbal and writing questions as well. During this session, I went into more detail in showing her what parts of the essay she had written could be improved on, so I hope the next essay she writes will be that much better for it. Her homework is to keep learning the most common SAT words and also to take another practice test."
"Today we finished the remainder of the English practice section from last session, and began new sections of both English and Reading. The student's reading speed is really good - just about exactly where it should be. He's also learning what to look for in English and Reading questions so that the answer is straightforward in the right way."
"I found a new practice SAT for us to go over, and the student and I focused on the reading/writing sections. He has good instincts for deciding the appropriate alternative to bad sentences, and determining the mistakes within paragraphs."
"We started things off with an essay practice - I had The student write a whole essay, then we went over it together and I told him spots I thought he could improve. After that, I answered his questions about the essay structure as a whole entity. We worked on a math section next, which went much better! I think he's starting to get a better hang of the medium difficulty questions, which require a little more logic but not necessarily advanced knowledge."
"The student and I reviewed material from all three sections of the exam, taking practice questions from both of the books. We have two paths to achieve the desired 2180/1480 score: to improve Writing section multiple choice questions and increase 1-2 points on the essay, along with Critical Reading and Math reviews, and we've been covering all our bases. The student's focus was again excellent, and his willingness to work through material, extensive vocabulary, and math common sense are all good signs of his progress."
"We covered SAT vocabulary. We started on the writing section as well and covered SAT writing by doing a practice exam. We reviewed the results of the SAT practice exam. Overall the student did quite well on the practice exam. We will be working on the writing and math sections at first while practicing the vocabulary."
"We went over the student's mistakes from section 6 (the writing section) of the third practice SAT in the Official Guide, as well as additional math, reading, and writing samples."
"The student and I focused on critical reading, and we went through all the reading sections in test 4. The student is planning to work through more long passages before his SAT on Saturday."
"Final preparation for test next week. We went through her homework and looked at what she got wrong. Talked a bit about vocabulary and suggested what she should look at/work on this week to be as prepared as possible for those questions. Worked on math to try to cover as many types of problems as possible."
" - Went over Math and Writing sections from Test 1. - Most of writing mistakes were with singular/plural matching, will improve next time after learning the patterns. - Assigned the CR from Test 1, will also go over SAT II next meeting during the week."
"We focused on practicing on the math section, looking at specific problems and going over the general subject areas that she had trouble with. We also went over the common errors on the writing multiple choice section, and identified them in actual practice problems."
