Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We worked on root words, prefixes, and suffixes and derived word meanings from the context. We also covered practice on complex sentences and complex clause structure. Additionally, we continued work on the graphic novel Odysseus (as adapted for elementary aged children)."
"Tonight, the student and I met once again to discuss his progress in his History and English class. We began by talking about his newest reading assignment "Death of a Salesman," by Arthur Miller. He voiced concern over his understanding of the "point" of the play, so we began by going over the setting and context of the story. We discussed basic themes such as the American dream, and he really appreciated the in-depth analysis and responded well to the discussion. Once we finished this contextual conversation, we drew a t-chart comparing the advantages and disadvantages of the North and South during the Civil War. This gave him a better understanding of the outcome of the conflict. We will meet again next week."
"The student and I outlined 4 essay possibilities for her upcoming Global midterm exam. We also wrote one or two thesis statements for each essay. We are hoping to work on her ELA midterm essay on Saturday."
"The student is working on a high school admission essay. During the session, we discussed the components of the pre-writing process as well as the various aspects of draft editing. He already has a grasp of basic mechanics, but he needed help organizing his ideas and staying focused on the prompt."
"We covered parts of speech, sentence structure, and writing techniques. The student is motivated. I left a writing assignment. The student was initially reserved, but rapport was quickly established."
"We covered grammar and spelling. I had the student identify his own issues and long-term goals as well as jot down reminders and tips he gained along the way as I coached him with grammar and spelling. I coached with examples and illustrations. I then gave him homework to help him remember the tips in his notebook. After my several examples, he was able to conclude logically on his own and come up with the right answer."
