"Today we worked on finding the areas of variously partitioned sectors of circles. The student didn't have much trouble with the basic area questions, so I decided to give him a workout and help him think his way through doing several of the problems entirely in his head. I explained that this is an underappreciated math skill which will dramatically improve his memory for mathematical knowledge if he is committed to the practice (and patient with himself). When the problems got too tough, of course, I encouraged him to take notes of important information along the way -- learning, like life, requires a careful balance between many opposing forces. He performed quite well on the more complicated shaded regions questions (writing things down again). I provided him with only a few clues, and he was able to see his own way to most of the answers from there. In fact, he solved one problem in a way in which I did not initially notice it could be solved (and, what's more, his answer explained the form of my own answer in an interesting way). I, of course, shared this insight with him. He's catching on quite well to all of the information I give him. In my opinion, given his level of understanding, he listens very well in general. He could have a little more trouble staying totally focused in school, of course, for countless reasons. I just thought I would point out that he seems to be quite focused when he is with me. If, after he has caught up to his classes, he stays similarly committed and attentive, and continues to push himself as he has been, I expect his fundamentals in all things to improve dramatically. Of course, nothing comes without practice and dedication. As long as he maintains concentration, practices regularly, and doesn't distract himself with anxiety, I expect him to excel in Geometry in the near future."
"During this session, volume of objects were again reviewed. The student completed an online project assignment, a quiz, and a homework assignment."
"We continued to work on finding the area of a sector or segment of a circle. We also completed a couple of word problems applying this concept. We then went back and returned to finding the area of a regular polygon using an apothem. At the end of the session, we made a short review sheet on how to find the apothem of common regular polygons and then the steps to find the apothem of any regular polygon."
"The student and I worked on her review for her upcoming test. She had completed much of the review but had issues with three sections: deriving information about regular polygons, word problems and geometric probabilities. We focused the lion's share of our efforts on the section on regular polygons. We finished our session by examining the word problems and geometric probabilities (neither of which she had issue with)."
"Today we reviewed for her test coming up on translations, rotations, reflections, and dilations. I showed her a method to write that transformation algebraically, which made it easier to dilate shapes about the origin on graphs."
"We worked on sectors and solving for the area of a shaded part of a circle. The student had some misconceptions at first, but we were able to clarify all of the material by the end of the session."
