Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Mechanism of evolution: Macroevolution vs. microevolution: Genetic equilibrium and Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, its requisites as well as practice problems. Classification and phylogeny of animals: how to make a cladogram or phylogenetic tree as well as understanding the relationship between organisms. Discussion of geological timescale: distinguishing among eras as well as important events in them; relevant mass extinctions. Plate tectonics and continental drift."
"In this session, we reviewed oxidation-reduction (redox) reactions and how do balance redox equations, using a sure-fire technique that works 100% of the time in both acidic and basic solutions. Apparently the teacher taught her students how to balance redox equations without explaining what was really going on. This void was filled in detail, and Julia exhibited mastery of the material very quickly. I promised her that I would share my tutorial on the subject, outlining all the relevant steps, via email."
"Topics: In our first meeting we discussed our plan to prepare for the AP exam in May. For our second session, we will start working through the list of exam topics and cover any areas that the student needs to review. We will also work through the current topics that will be covered in class this week."
"We reviewed density, polyatomic ions, ionic compounds, and limiting reagent problems. We learned how to calculate excess reagent and started learning about the properties of water. Next session we will review what the student covers in class this week and in preparation for her exam."
"We went over 2 different labs and the student completed the reports for them. We also covered several concepts that the student did not completely understand that were on her first test. She now understands them completely."
"The student and I went over his math homework--he has become quite comfortable with getting the slope of a line from two points on the line. We spent most of the session working on his science project. We created a procedures list and added to the materials list. We spent time discussing what is important in an experimental design."
