"Even though the student just had an exam, we are already getting started on working through the content from the beginning of her semester to prepare her for the final exam. We were able to go through isomer and boiling point related questions. The latter was not so much of an issue for her when it came to grasping the material, but she did struggle a bit to find constitutional isomers when given a molecular formula. I used color-coded carbons to demonstrate how she can pick carbons and "move them around" to result in new isomers. That helped her visualize the content much better."
"We had a 1hr session on Friday where we finished reviewing carbohydrates and started amino acids. Today, we had a normal length session and finished reviewing amino acids, pKa's and electrophoresis of amino acids, the Gabriel amine synthesis, reductive amination, Strecker amino acid synthesis, malonic ester amino acid synthesis, and started reviewing NMR."
"Today, we continued our review. Our primary focus was on the organometallic reactions that involve transition metal complexes. We covered the method for assigning oxidation states to the transition metal in the complex and calculating the number of electrons involved in the formation of the complex. We also looked at a couple of catalytic cycles, Kumada, Suzuki, and Ring Closing Metathesis. The student is great, and we got a lot covered. Once again, as in my previous sessions, I used the board and encouraged the student to answer questions."
"Today the student and I discussed some practice problems she had regarding NMR and IR spectroscopy. I went over with her some of the problems and helped her with figuring out molecular structures using only the NMR and IR spectrum."
"The student and I continued to work through his problem set. This session, we specifically covered mechanisms such as, Grignard reaction, reduction, dehydrations, ketol formation, and Friedel-Crafts acylation."
"We covered a wide-range of practice problems that would be on the student's upcoming test: isomerization of alkenes by acid-catalyzed hydration, retrosynthetic analysis problems, and stereochemistry problems. The student was very eager to clarify her confusion on some topics and understand the material. We made much progress during the progression of our tutoring session."
