Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered functions: what is a function, what are variables, what are the domain and range of functions, and graphing functions. We also covered the absolute value function. I think he has a firm grasp of the concepts. Speed and accuracy in his computations will come with practice. We also reviewed his past test on chapter seven. Lastly, I introduced him to mathematical proofs (this was informally a part of his past test), which will become useful in solving math problems with multiple steps or cases, and will be useful in developing a logical thought process (mathematical or otherwise)."
"Reviewed recent biology test in which student did well, i.e. 4/5 short answer and 18/20 multiple choice questions correct. Reviewed linear algebra homework which involved simplification of terms."
"The student will be starting a new chapter this coming week and we went over three sections of it to prepare him for the week. First we did Completing the Square, then the Quadratic Formula, and finally the Discriminant from the Quadratic formula. I also showed him how factoring, completing the square and quadratic formula are all doing the exact same thing. I gave him some similar ones to try himself and he seemed to be picking it up really well."
"The student demonstrates increased confidence in the face of his comprehensive midterms next week. His skill with the physics formulas solidifies as he works with more math problems of increasing complexity. We completed yet another review, and I had him do a practice physics/math mini-test, in order to ascertain his ability for this upcoming exam. He is doing well without any pressure upon him to excel, but I suspect his test anxiety may be a problem. I voiced this to his parents, so that they could encourage him on a more consistent basis to overcome this problem. Other than that, we are moving on to more complicated subjects, like graphing and synthetic division."
"We decided that, instead of going through her homework, we would focus mainly on classwork problems she needs help with. I will also be bringing extra problems that she needs practice on and have her do them as extra homework practice. She especially needs this for word problems that have two equations and two unknowns to solve for, as related to rate and distance. I had left her with a sheet of factoring problems to do for practice."
"We reviewed for the student's upcoming test on polynomials, their classification, division, and factoring. We went over missed questions from his last quiz, which were mainly due to missing signs when working through the problems. After reviewing the quiz, he was fully competent in the math covered on it. We also reviewed the study guide for the test, which he did very well working through. I helped work through a few vocabulary and equation issues, and I believe he will do very well on his test."
