"The student did better on her geometry test, but she still has room for improvement. We went over her test, and I found that she knows the material, but she sometimes makes small mistakes that cause her to lose points. For example, she reversed the slope formula and put the x coordinates over the y coordinates, but she did every subsequent step of the problem right. She feels that she has to rush during her exams, which might contribute to her mistakes. I encouraged her to slow down, take her time to answer the questions, and go back and check her work. We will work on this from now on. After we finished going over her exam, we reviewed her homework, which dealt with triangle geometry."
"We continued with circles in our session today. The student's homework consisted mainly of finding arc lengths given central angles, and she became more and more confident in doing these types of problems as we went along. There was a more challenging problem regarding central angles in ratios to one another, but she was able to grasp the idea after I gave her some other examples. To prove that she really understood the concept, I gave her a similar question centered around angles in a triangle. She finished that problem wonderfully. We also covered clock questions (angle between hour and minute hands/distance between hour and minute hands) since one was on her homework. After we finished math, I talked to her about organizing her school materials better. We cleaned out papers that made no sense to her or just scrap sheets of paper out of her math folder. I also helped her clip together all the material she has from previous units to help keep them organized and so she knows where to look when she is studying for her final exam."
"The student and I continued to look at the concept of area of polygons. We first reviewed the formulas for area for different shapes and then tackled a multipart problem that used many different pieces of knowledge (properties of quadrilaterals, right triangles, strategies for finding important shape values -angles, edge lengths - from other values, and area formulas). We also practiced problems that involved the area of regular polygons, finding radii and apothegms, computing area with different methods, etc. Finally we worked on some stock market mathematics (stock shares and mutual funds). He is definitely showing improvement, and each week he remembers more and more. He is not afraid to admit when he doesn't know an answer, which is good. However, he WILL often know the answer, but admits too quickly that he doesn't. We are working on building confidence and having the memorized facts be clearer."
"Today we started our session doing a geometry review on special right triangles and using trigonometry with right triangles. We did many problems using SOH CAH TOA to help the student become more familiar with the trig functions. Towards the end of our session we transition to Earth Science because he had a lot of makeup assignments to complete."
"We went over a lesson regarding the properties of polyhedrons and went over a number of problems regarding sketching, verbalizing, and comparing these properties. She is progressing in verbalization skills, three dimensional visualization, and critical thinking skills. She is also showing more organization and reasoning in her work."
"We covered polygons, regular polygons, and the equations associated with these shapes. We also briefly touched on specific quadrilaterals such as trapezoids, rectangles, and especially parallelograms. She was not struggling at all when going through the material. The only times when she gets choked up are during test environments, so we will be working on test-taking skills. I worked on conceptualizing strategies during the session with her, since that is the best way to not forget the formulas."
