Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During this session, the student and I focused on his math homework for the day. He seemed to have a good understanding of how to plot points on a graph, but he did have some challenges with understanding how the lines formed from plotted points related to what each axis represents. After some explanation and examples, he seemed to have a better grasp on this. He was very good at alerting me to which part of the problem he starts to have trouble with, which helped me tailor the session to his specific needs. Overall, he seems to have a decent understanding of the general concepts he is learning about, but has no difficulty applying them."
"The student has another math quiz. We worked on 3 sections of homework together, and then I wrote her a set of parallel problems for the topics she asked to review."
"We had a review of arithmetic with negative numbers and fractions. The student finished his homework, we discussed it, and prepared for a quiz."
"The student is a great student with an excellent mathematical foundation. It is clear that she has mastered basic math and her skills with fractions and decimals are great. We reviewed a lot today so that I could get a good grasp of where her skill level was. We did some work with fractions (adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing) that she did well on. She had a bit of difficulty with the dividing fractions, but after a quick refresher, she was good to go. We also went over the definitions of integer, whole number, natural number, rational versus irrational numbers, and real versus imaginary numbers. She did well with these and was able to explain them to me."
"Today was my first meeting with the student. She has to turn in her homework from Sections 1.1-1.8 tomorrow. During our session, we covered Sections 1.2-1.5. She told me she needed help with setting up word problems. We spent a good hour on this. I shared a few strategies with her, because like me, she is a visual learner. I taught her how to draw pictures to get a better idea of what the question is asking. She will finish the remainder of her homework and submit it tomorrow. This is the very first assignment for the class. We will meet again Wednesday to review for her first test that will be administered on Thursday."
"We worked on multiplying and dividing rational fractions problems. We covered factoring the expressions to cancel terms and using the terms as hints for factoring. We also started reviewing last semester's material for the midterm. Good job overall."
