Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We started the session going over the responses from last time and discussed why the boys chose the answers they selected. We discussed strategies including the process of elimination and plugging in similar words to find the best choices for the blanks in the sentences. Then we practiced a similar exercise from the pre-test in the SAT prep book. Then we selected ten words from choices given on the practice test and the boys were assigned to find the word meanings using word arithmetic, a dictionary, or other sources. We finished the session by assigning another essay and discussing writing process strategies, including utilizing a graphic organizer."
"Today we went over strategies for each ACT section, English rules, and common math formulas. For the strategies, we went over general strategies for the exam (like always guess), and individual strategies for each section, like plan ahead when writing the essay. Next, I taught the student English grammar and sentence rules, such as when to use a semicolon and how to spot a run-on sentence. I also taught him independent and dependent clauses, and we went over practice problems on pages 42~44 in the test prep book. For the math, I taught him basic formulas and we went over pages 52~65. For the writing, we went over the prompt on page 122. He is planning to take the ACT in December and hopes to score around 32~34."
"Today we took a practice test, covering mathematics reasoning and speed reading for Reading Comprehension, as well as English. The student is going to do very well on the test next Saturday."
