Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we covered periodic trends and reviewed solubility rules and strong acids and bases. The student improved tremendously in her memorization of acids and bases and solubility rules. Organic chemistry is new to her, so we will hit the subject hard. For practice, I left her reading materials involving general and environmental chemistry topics that may show up on the test."
"We covered the critical reading section from a prep book, looking at 14 tactics to approach this part of the SAT. We also did practice passages and went over vocabulary associated with critical reading question stems. He showed me his test score, and he is off to a great start! His homework is to complete practice exercises in the prep book, and work on vocabulary."
"The student feels that the ACT went well overall. She completed three sections of math from the SAT book and we reviewed the questions. Some of the topics we covered included perimeter and area of irregular polygons, percent discounts, evaluating functions, weighted averages, and word problems with several variables. By the October SAT, she will have completed all 10 practice tests. All that experience should certainly serve her well."
"Reviewed nuclear reactions/decay, drew diagrams for optics, and introduced angular velocity/torque/moment of inertia."
"We began today's session by reviewing the student's practice Math and Reading sections for homework. He is continuing to improve in his retention of vocabulary, and we spent a lot of time today reviewing past words and introducing new words. We worked with some especially challenging SAT math questions that helped him clarify some tricks for percentage and systems of equations calculations, and we concluded with some two-blank sentence completion questions."
"We spent 20 minutes on vocabulary review and 40 minutes on a reading section, including vocab and reading comp questions. Student was particularly successful at annotating the reading passage which appeared to enhance his comprehension and speed."
"Today, the student and I specifically covered the sentence completion questions of the Critical Reading section. We worked together to complete all of the example practice questions in her book. We talked about the importance of thinking of answers beforehand as well as understanding the positive/negative connotation of the missing words. We talked about strategies to employ when vocabulary is too difficult."
"SAT math: geometry, algebra; verbal: text completion, reading comprehension. The student has the potential to do very well on the test."
"The student is definitely improving, in both ability and confidence. Today we went over some questions from practice test #1 that she had done by herself . We then finished practice test #1 (one reading and one writing section), and also completed the first math section of practice test #2. Math concepts are coming more easily and we are able to move through questions more quickly, and she is excelling at the writing sections."
"We focused mainly on the reading and writing sections last week, so this session we caught up on a few math lessons. The student progressed quickly as we reviewed pattern-spotting problems in Algebra and began basic geometry (complementary and supplementary angles). Next week we will continue geometry and take another look at the reading, writing, and essay sections."
"We discussed the advent of slavery in the Americas through the beginning of the 17th Century; considered the social and economic repercussions of slavery for West Africa and Europe; compared and contrasted the different regions that had slavery in the Americas, and discussed the reasons for these differences and the effect that these varying characteristics had on the nature of these societies."
"Today the student and I reviewed his practice test which I had assigned him the previous week. He learned how the test was graded based on his raw scores for each subject. We also briefly reviewed his essay and talked about techniques one can use while writing the essay to effectively brainstorm and make a plan for writing it out in the time allotted. I assigned as homework the essay from Practice Test #3 as additional practice and so that we will have more to look over for next week. Overall a very good session, and we know which particular areas we will continue to work on in the coming weeks."
