Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"As expected, the student's main issue is motivation. He actually has some very strong strategies for approaching tests, such as writing out formulas at the top of the test, but he gets discouraged easily. He and I spent most of our session preparing for his Algebra test by examining his study guide, which mostly covered factoring polynomial expressions and solving and graphing polynomial functions. Through the problems on the study guide, along with a few more which I created for him, he seemed to have a firm grasp on the topics by the time we stopped for the night. I also tried to impart some good general study advice, the most important piece of which was to get plenty of sleep, especially after an evening workout."
"The student and I reviewed his math section from last week. We have noticed that he needs to write out his work. He's doing it mostly in his head and I think that's causing simple errors. Also, we have noticed that we definitely need to go over trigonometry more. The student is going to read the section on trig in his ACT prep book and then we'll review it next week. He is also going to take another math practice section."
"The student and I went over words with the short u sound. We worked on her spelling homework, an then reviewed the words with a spelling test, modeled after the test she takes in class. We also worked on her letter formation, especially keeping the line on the lower case u close to the curve and not leaving space, or a "shark tooth". The student and I then reviewed her math homework (addition), and we wrapped up by reading Dick & Jane."
"The girls have a math test tomorrow so we covered surface area and volume for their test. We went over their review worksheet and I gave them some extra problems to do. Student A seemed to have a little more trouble understanding how to do multiple steps of problems. I'm not sure she completely understood it by the end of the session. Student B however, had a little trouble figuring out which equations should be used but she understood by the end of the session."
"Practiced all three mathematics sections on one review test. Reviewed errors after each section and identified why errors were made. "
"Discussed general MCAT strategies and how best to manage one's time when taking the exam. Discussed my preferred method of approaching the Verbal section of the MCAT and ways to dissect the questions and answer choices without reading the passage and then going back and answering the questions that we couldn't answer just by reading the questions alone."
"We covered polynomials today. We looked at adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing polynomials. During this session I noted that we will need to focus on fractions, so I plan on going over fractions with him during our next session."
"The student was pretty groggy this morning, so we reviewed by playing a game with his picture/activity cards. Through this we were able to review colors, numbers, letters, and several of his other vocabulary words, like house, dog, cat, boy, girl, sheep, mouse, etc."
"Continued to review math concepts and definitions. Today we had several concepts that involved examples (solving quadratic equations by factoring and with the quadratic equation, solving a set of equations by elimination, determining if a set of equations were inverse functions). I then put together some practice problems for her to work on her own."
"We continued our preparation/review for the exam. The student did two practice exams and she did very well. Right now we are focusing on double checking work before finalizing an answer. She is understanding all the concepts well and I think she will be well prepared for the exam this spring."
"States of matter, Physical and chemical properties, atoms , elements , molecules , electron , proton , neutron concepts, mixtures and pure substances, potential and kinetic energy , acid base concepts , pH concepts, different ways of separating substances - evaporation , distillation , filtration, settling and decantation"
"The student and I worked on some math again as I had her figure out the correct answers for some math questions I gave her."
