Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student is working on letter groupings and how those can be sounded out; double vowels, silent e, -tion and -ed suffixes, etc. We also worked on spelling words from school, and are reading a story together."
"Continued differential equations. It looks like his class is wrapping up separable equations and linear equations. We had to review integration by parts to solve a few of them. He'll probably be covering Bernoulli equations and homogeneous linear equations next."
"The student and I discussed her second practice verbal section. We re-emphasized sticking to "boring" interpretations of the passages and covering up the answer choices while predicting a meaning for the word in the blank. We also reviewed reading strategies. I think she would benefit from continuous study of high-yield vocab words."
"The student and I went over ionic compounds (chemistry, physical properties, bonding, etc.) and metals. From what I could tell, she seemed to have a much better grasp of the material at the conclusion of our session."
"Today we covered partial derivatives of functions of two variables. During homework practice, we talked about several strategies for problems, including modifying the way one writes x and y variables to make them more distinct, mentally substituting constants for constant expressions, recognizing patterns of function multiplication, division, and composition, and applying the appropriate differentiation rule in each case."
"The student and I completed our review of the SAT Writing test today, as we went over study material on the completing paragraphs portion of the test and the essay prompt. Just as with the previous multiple-choice verbal-score material, the student had no trouble at all with the Completing Paragraphs exercises. The Essay prompt may prove more challenging, however; due to the nature of the essay, we were unable to practice it during our session. I have asked the student to complete a full sample Writing test for next week, including a timed Essay prompt; we will review her writing together in our next session."
"We went over how the slope can be determined from a given function, and also how it can be determined given two points. The client brought her old test, and I was able to explain the problems she had difficulty with."
"The student and I revised her outline/plan for her clinical competency section of her thesis. We began by addressing the plan for her explanation of the pastoral nature of her clinical work, and then we revised the plan for her clinical case study. Afterward, we addressed the comments of her faculty reviewer."
"I worked with the student during this session on math. We reviewed his homework packet for this week. We worked on basic functions / algebraic relationships (e.g. 3X - 5 = Y) as well as scientific notation."
"The student and I reviewed her math material for an upcoming test on Friday. We reviewed Conic Sections and their respective equations: circles, ellipses, hyperbolas, and parabolas. We reviewed how to graph each conic section and what each conic equation means."
"Today we worked on synonyms, sentence completion, and reading comprehension. The student's biggest areas to work on so far are synonyms and working on finishing the reading passages/questions within the time limit. Next week we're planning on him taking a full length test to see where he is at since he will have one more month to prepare for the test."
"The student and I reviewed her homework, making sure that she understood the general instructions and finer points of point-slope equations. We also studied for her test tomorrow. She is a very intelligent young lady and a fast learner! Well done!"
