Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I started with a review of last time. She did some additional problems on percents, fractions, proportions, and setting up word problems. I had her do some more work on translating word problems as this is a crucial skill and all concepts on the GRE will be tested in word problems at times. Finally, from the fundamentals we went over the properties of exponents. We then got into the GRE book with actual GRE problems. I showed her some examples of problems that are easier to solve using shortcuts rather than the "classroom method." These kinds of problems are common on the GRE, and I encouraged her to look for patterns in the numbers rather than trying to use the same procedure every time. I had her do some problems on systems of equations and showed her how to solve them without ever actually solving for the variables. In the end she was able to do some of the simpler variants of these problems. We finished with a couple of algebra word problems. She still needs to become more familiar with generating her own plan to get variables into equations and then come up with solutions. Also I hope to give her a lot of practice on the pre-algebra problems next time: proportions, averages, and analyzing charts and graphs."
"Today, we reviewed/covered three primary areas: probability, combinations, and exponent rules. The student takes the test on Tuesday"
"We did word quizzes that I made up to help on his vocabulary. We also reviewed some crucial concepts in trigonometry and ratios."
