"We practiced reading, focusing specifically on vowel sounds and certain hard consonant combinations, such as st, sp, fr, and tr. We read a book that was above her reading level, but it is productive to give her a challenge. This strategy ensures that she is not just memorizing words, but actually sounding them out. We also practiced some of the list of words provided by her teacher. She loves making new sentences by combining notecards of words. I think this is a fun strategy for ensuring that her spelling and reading improve. She is very articulate and curious."
"We have starting focusing on blends and chunking. The student is picking up these skills quickly. I also have started helping him use context and pictures to identify unknown words. He is becoming comfortable with reading "first time/never seen" words in the context of the story."
"The student focused on the assignment due, which is the analysis of interpersonal relationships in "The Joy Luck Club." We watched the movie together, took notes, and then discussed the different relationships. He chose to focus on the cross-cultural mother-daughter relationships. I talked him through a strong thesis and then helped him to structure a body that topically covered how the relationships indicate communication failures using key concepts from the text and how those relationships are repaired when the communication dynamic changes, leading to resolution. He did an outline and then I assigned him to complete a rough draft for my review before the next session."
