Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During our last session the student and I discussed Mark Twain's great novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. We focused on passages that her teacher identified as indicative of pervasive themes in the novel, and also as indicative of personality attributes and changes undergone by the characters. We read each passage and considered its significance by reference to a list of themes that was provided by her teacher. Often, we would search other text in the vicinity of these passages for contextual clues. This was our last meeting of the semester, and we plan to meet again starting in January, when our focus will shift to a large, semester-long group project that the student is starting with some friends. This project will culminate in a 3 minute long presentation that her group will give at the end of the spring semester."
"The student began writing her paper. She and I worked on the structure of the paper, defining the composition of each paragraph: topic sentence, quotation from "Little Women," quotation from her research source, and interpreting the information to draw all materials together. She was able to complete about one-third of the paper. I urged her to contact me if she needed further help before the draft was due. She is quick and eager to take instruction in how to compose a meaningful paragraph and how to use textual sources."
"Went over four reading assignments and discussed possible ways to write an upcoming in class essay that required her to either defend, argue or qualify the points brought up in the personal essays."
"We worked on reading skills and focusing/attention strategies today. We enjoyed using some tech tools to support these concepts. The phoneme focus was sn and sl for most of our time and applying the vowel rules that the student knows."
"The student and I started off by reading some comics this evening. I brought Calvin & Hobbes and Avatar: The Lost Adventures for her to read because both are near her current reading level but short and episodic enough for her to pick up/put down at her leisure. We then played a math game and a spelling game before reviewing her math and reading homework. I think she is doing very well."
"The student finished another extra credit assignment as well as all of her math homework. She also finished some additional practice problems we made and completed an assignment due Monday! It is great that she is doing homework early because study skills are her biggest challenge."
