Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student completed her homework. She simplified algebraic expressions having exponents. This also involved operating on polynomials (adding, subtracting and multiplication). I need to teach her to correct her work better. Other than that, she is doing excellently."
"The student was given additional problems to practice the conversion skills we worked on last Monday. She again had to convert fractions to decimals, percentages to fractions or mixed numbers, percentages to decimals, and mixed numbers to percentages."
"This time, we finished going through a study guide for the student's upcoming third test. He was a bit nervous when we first started because the test was the next day, but once we got into the groove, he got a lot better. One of the things the student struggled with was using the rules for converting negative and fractional exponents to positive exponents and radicals. This presented an issue when it came to integrals, as many of them require conversions of this sort before applying rules of integration. After some practice, he seemed to grasp the concept."
"The student and I covered one step and two step equations. He completed a practice test on those concepts. He also completed a Global Studies assignment involving an article on the Amazon Rain Forest. The assignment required him to identify its global and environmental benefits and the various threats to its existence. He was engaged and attentive during the session, displaying a positive attitude toward the material reviewed. We rehearsed the strategies previously introduced to help him solve equations. The win from this session was that he reported he made a 'B' on his Global Studies test covering North America mapping."
"We covered factoring complex polynomials, and synthetic division. The student has a good handle on factoring complex polynomials, and her attitude is great about learning! We worked a little closer on finding the first factor to use for synthetic division, just to clarify it a bit more for her, but there were some problems that she had a better handle on the material than I did."
"The student is preparing for finals which occur this week and next. He is reviewing the chapters and concepts for the course and will determine which will require concentrated work. The first section is a graphing exam; as a result, we covered a review section on graphing. He has a good grasp of the various approaches. Solving parabolas (axis of symmetry, vertex, intercepts) is an area for study; lines should be a no-brainer. Next week, he will have selected subjects he feels less certain about for study in other chapters and we will review those. He is well situated for the exams."
