Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In this session, we worked through the previous material and a little bit of geometry. The student understands shape classification really well and felt prepared for her quiz. She still has not received her grade from her previous test, so we were unable to go over any old material."
"During my session with Student 1, we worked on permutations. She had a positive attitude towards learning the new material, and she picked up how to work with permutations fast. She struggled a bit with the concepts and notation at the beginning of the session, but by the end, she had devised her own way of thinking through and solving her homework problems. The win from this session is her understanding of how to work with permutations. During my session with Student 2, we worked with percentages: finding a certain percentage of x or finding what percent of y another number is. She was very comfortable setting up the equations. Once we talked though a few practice problems, her understanding improved significantly. She had a positive attitude towards getting as much of her homework done during our time together as possible."
"We worked on word problems (mixture and d=rt) and factoring. The student isn't struggling too much with the material we covered. It seemed like more of an identification issue for the proper factoring technique. Strategies to identify these types include looking for perfect squares and perfect cubes and reviewing exponent properties to help clarify why x^6 is a perfect cube, etc."
"In the session today we covered multiplying and dividing polynomials. We also covered a little bit of scientific notation. At first, the student was unsure of the specifics for polynomials. Once we went through several examples, he was able to do some problems with minimal help. His confidence in the topic was much better by the end of the session, but he will need to have more practice to really master the topics. We will continue to work on that."
"The student earned an 89% on her chapter 8 test last week. We started working on binomials. We were multiplying and combining like terms. She did very well and did not have any problems. She completed her assignment due for tomorrow as well as her assignment for tomorrow night, section 9.3. In this section we were multiplying special binomials, ones squared as well as opposites (x + 5) (x - 5). She did an excellent job."
"During this session, I covered graphing coordinates and linear equations with the student. We discussed the y=mx+b equation and how to determine the slope of a graph. He completed his homework assignment for class. We then reviewed the topics that we had covered during the prior two sessions per his request. He showed improvement in these areas. He is more comfortable evaluating functions when given specified values of x and solving inequalities. We did a number of practice problems to solidify these concepts. I advised him to continue to practice these absolute value inequality problems to make sure he knows the difference between less than and greater than inequalities, but I feel he has a good understanding of the material. Furthermore, he is working on improving his handwriting and looking more carefully at equations to avoid simple errors. Overall, I was happy with our session."
