Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"For our session today, the student and I discussed and worked through the questions for a lab he did in class on static electricity. This lab entailed two pieces of tape initially stuck together. When they were peeled apart, we observed the electric charges that each one took on based on their interaction with each other (attraction or repulsion). To complete the questions, we recreated the lab activities and observed how each strip interacted with the other, as well as non-charged control strips."
"We covered oscillatory motion given by the formula, as well as wave motion of standing waves in the strings. We focused on the problems listed in the back of the text and did a variety of problem difficulties, from 0 to 3. The student has solid background knowledge of the subject matter and has an upbeat attitude toward learning. She is confident in her ability to master this subject matter. The general strategies employed this session included drawing and vividly imagining the physical situations, and from there inferring what type of motion are we dealing with. In the second step, the type of equation of motion (or conservation law) is sought to get to the solution the fastest way."
"The student has a test tomorrow over magnetism so today's lesson was spent mostly on preparation for that. We started with a little bit of math and just went over a test she had really quickly. We then moved on to a review sheet for physics. The hardest part about this unit is it is so conceptual and not very computational. This tends to be harder for most students, but we got through the review. In fact, she did quite well with the review and only had questions on some pretty hard concepts. The majority of the concepts, however, she seemed to be grasping just fine."
