Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In this session, the student and I finished our preparation for the science test and embarked on our treatment of the passage-based reading section. We talked about the four different kinds of passages that always appear in this section, and why the time limit for completing them is so strict. We discussed and practiced some strategies for working more quickly and efficiently; the practice of reading the questions before the passage and underlining names, quotes or line references, and key words while doing so; then reading the passage quickly and with a view toward finding phrases or sections that correspond to a question; answering each specifics-based question as she gets to the portion of the text that gives her the information she needs to choose the right answer (or rule out the wrong ones); two strategies for keeping track of a paragraph's or passage's main idea or overall tone, or the author's primary purpose; and an alternative approach to the reading test, wherein she would still begin by reading the questions carefully, but would then read the entire passage before tackling the questions in order."
"The student and I did a survey of all four sections on the test. I especially noticed immediate improvement in the reading section."
"The student and I focused the first hour of our session completely on the math section of the ACT. Overall, I think he is getting better at the content material. The last hour we worked on science, English, and reading. The student did very well in both the reading and science, despite thinking the reading passage was boring. Our main priority in the coming weeks is to have him practice taking small breaks throughout the test so he doesn't get burnt out."
