Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student is applying to several university campuses this week and we discussed his two application essays in detail today. I reviewed them and inserted comments in the document for 45 min before emailing them back to him. And then from 4:15 to 5:15 pm we discussed my suggestions online and eventually by phone. He is going to revise the two documents and resend them to me so that we can go over them a final time on Friday before he submits them. His personal statement promises to be a good one, focused on his experience as a high school wrestler and what he has learned from the whole experience. (He doesn't plan to try to wrestle at the collegiate level from what I gather.) His response to the second prompt is a narrative of his experience of his parents' divorce when he was in elementary school, and how he has come to understand and accept it as he grown older. His prose is quite clear and readable."
"The student and I met for one hour to go over his first draft of his essay in response to the prompt, "Some students have a background or story that is so central to their identity that they believe their application would be incomplete without it." While he had a general idea of what he wanted to write about and grammar use and vocabulary use were quite good. Consequently, we started by discussing and coming up with a concise thesis statement. We then discussed how he could reorganize his current essay with clear topic sentences at the beginning of each paragraph and incorporating more examples. By then end, he had a rough outline of the changes he needed to make. He was incredibly enthusiastic and a pleasure to work with. He will have a revised draft ready to go over at our next meeting. His school advisor will also take a look at the essay in the interim and provide comments."
"We worked together online to revise her essays to completion. She will revise and submit the essays by the December deadline."
