" We spent the hour reviewing Geometry skills and general test-taking strategies for the Math section, such as: * using the fact that numeric answer choices are always presented in numerical order to narrow the possibilities quickly by testing answer choice C & using it to rule out the other 2 answers that are too large or too small; * judging when to use the calculator vs. when to estimate, do full or partial mental calculations, or work in a traditional way from written notes or diagrams; and * identifying when the problem or the answer choices allow for shortcuts like solving only for the first or last digit or two, solving for a multiple of a variable (instead of for the variable itself), or stopping before simplifying a solution as far as possible."
"The student definitely did better on the verbal sections this week. She gets all of the easy questions now, and is more willing to discuss passages and possible answers with me, instead of just listening. She made flashcards of the vocabulary words I sent her last week and knew them all perfectly. As we went through questions, we looked up words that she didn't know and she wrote down the definitions to make more flashcards. As far as the Math, it seems to be going well, she only needed help with the last few of each section. There were two that I was actually unsure of, but I've looked up the answer key online and sent her the explanations, so I hope that helps. Oh, also, I asked her if she's reading anything right now, since reading is the best way I know to get a good feel for linguistic nuances. She's reading a nonfiction book, and we talked about the basic subject matter, it sounds interesting."
"Finished up a few Math problems. Worked on Critical Reading--Passage Based Reading & Sentence Completion. Also, gave the student short quiz on Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes."
